Titans stay strong
The strong Anderson Titans traveled to the Goodrich invitational last weekend, a tournament that Coach Jerry Frazier likes for his team to participate in over each Christmas break.
Alex Molloy (130) led Southgate with his second-place finish, losing only to a nationally ranked opponent.
“He wrestled really, really tough today,” Frazier said.
Tyler Carson (135) and Logan Parks (140) took fifth, Josh Lockwood (152), Cody Stanley (160) and heavyweight Austin Sloan took sixth, and Chris Pauly took seventh.
Frazier enjoys this tournament because it allows his Titans to see eight or nine state-ranked teams.
“It’s just a fun tournament,” he said. “You really get to see where you’re at. It’s nice to know where the kids are at this point in the year.”
The Titans have put themselves in position to win the Downriver League for the second year in a row, but know they still have work to do.
“We’ve put ourselves in a good spot,” Frazier said. “We’ve still got a long way to go. We have to wrestle though every time.”
The Titans still face Carlson and Lincoln Park in the final Downriver League quad meet, and rival Roosevelt in a dual meet before the season ends.
Anderson will face Summit and Canton on Jan. 9.
Trojans in Milford
The Trenton Trojans do not typically wrestle the week in between Christmas and New Years, but they traveled to the Milford team tournament for the first time this year.
Trenton placed seventh out of the sixteen teams there.
The teams were placed into pools and in their pool the Trojans defeated Dexter 45-22, Lakeland 61-17 and Milford 60-22 and fell to Swan Valley 39-33 and L’Anse Creuse 39-33.
Swan Valley is ranked fourth in D3 and 14th overall in the state and Coach Tom Bluhm was pleased with the way his team performed against them.
The undefeated Vikings were impressed with the performance of the Trojans and said it was their hardest match all year.
Dean Noffsinger (135) and Tom Stackpole (285) both went 5-0 on the day and were named to the all-tournament team.
Maverick Johnson (119), Gabe Wykle (152) and Tyler Purcell (189) all finished 4-1, and Ian Collier (112), Rob Cosgrove (140) and Josh Berry (215) all finished 3-2.
“I thought the kids wrestled real well, especially against Swan Valley,” Bluhm said. “The kids kinda took it all out in the match.”
The Trojans now turn to the Lakeland individual tournament this weekend, where they have fared well in the past.
“We’ve won it the last three years,” Bluhm said. “But every year’s a new year, so you gotta go out there and wrestle.”
