GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Defense leads Grosse Ile to league win over Riverview (PHOTO)

Four three-pointers and explosive second half defense was the key to Grosse Ile’s 45-38 victory over Huron League rival Riverview on Friday night.

The teams kept each other fairly even though out the first half, trading one-point leads at the end of the first two quarters.

Riverview took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter with the help of the first three-pointer of the game from Anna Vega.

Fouls came early and often in the first half of play, deciding much of the score.

“We weren’t playing disciplined enough so we were fouling,” Grosse Ile Coach Sandy Tobin said. “Then we had the shots, but we were missing them so that is frustrating as a coach.”

Despite the loss, Riverview Coach Marty Mucha thought his team handled the Red Devils well.

“I thought we played them pretty good,” he said. “Things kind of fell apart a little bit in the second half (but) we played hard and that’s all you can ask for.”

The Red Devils went into the break with a one point lead and came back with a strong second half, outscoring the Bucs 25-19 to secure their win.

The third quarter saw four three-pointers from three different Red Devils and Kate Tobin’s basket as the buzzer sounded, seemed to fuel the team as they headed to the fourth quarter.

After an early time out in the fourth, the defensive work from Grosse Ile intensified and they held Riverview to just seven points.

“We came back and were a little more composed in the second half,” Tobin said. “And I think that made the difference.

“They’re small, but they’re hard workers and do not give up.”

Andrea Plemmons led the Red Devils in rebounds with eight. Vanessa Wojno led in baskets, finishing the night with 11 points and six rebounds. Alex Carney followed with 10 points and seven rebounds, Kate Tobin had eight points and two rebounds, and Madyson Jankowski had six points and one rebound.

Tobin had two three-pointers, and Sarah Moehr, Megan Swick and Jankowski each had one.

The Bucs were led by strong seniors Anna Vega and Kelsey Brewer.

Brewer led with 15 points and one rebound and Vega finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

Michala Burke also had six rebounds to go with her two points, and Angela Zammit had six points and one rebound.

The Bucs now take the holiday break off before returning to the court in January.

“I think they’re gonna come along,” Mucha said. “They’re just coming together under a new guy.”

The Red Devils will host their annual holiday tournament next Thursday and Friday.

They will face Annapolis and the winner of that game will face the winner of the Carlson-Summit Academy game.

“We’re gonna stick with the same system and keep working hard,” Tobin said. “We haven’t won in the past couple of years (and) we have high hoes of doing better this year.”
