Riverview's Page All Hockey - Boys StoriesThe Riverview hockey team traveled for the first time for tournament play last weekend and earned a split in its two games. The Bucs went up to Gaylord where they defeated Cheboygan 7-1 in a Friday morning game. Brian Bachnak was dominating for the Bucs, recording four goals and one assist in the win. Alex Testy, Kyle Agius and Joe Vitale all had one goal and one assist, and Timmy Lyons contributed four assists. Cheboygan was not as strong as Coach Al Taurence had expected but he still thought his team played very well. The next day, Riverview faced East Grand Rapids and despite playing a great first 10 minutes, lost 6-3. Grand Rapids took a 3-0 lead but the Bucs came back with two goals of their own before facing a plethora of penalties in what Taurence described as a poorly called game. Riverview was handed eight penalties in the last two periods to Grand Rapids’ one. Brandon Mulligan got the Bucs on board, assisted by Garrett Watterworth and Gerald Helstowski. Bachnak scored the second, assisted by Lyons and Agius, and Lyons netted the last goal, from Bachnak and Helstowski. Despite the loss on Saturday, Taurence and his team were thrilled with the chance to travel to a tournament. Taurence said the weekend was great for his kids and it gave them a lot of bonding time. The Bucs are senior heavy and Taurence was pleased they were able to travel once before their Riverview career ended. Assistant coach Anthony Schooley’s parents live in Gaylord and a special moment for the team was when they invited the entire team over for a diner on Friday night. On Dec. 11, Bachnak recorded a hat trick and an assist to lead the Bucs to a 9-1 victory over the Flat Rock-Airport hockey team. The Bucs host Carlson tomorrow before taking the holiday break.
