HOCKEY: Flat Rock-Airport combo team finishes week 2-1

The Flat Rock-Airport combined hockey team won two of three games last week, including one in overtime.

On Saturday, the team beat Holland West Ottawa 5-3.

It was their second game in as many days and the team was finally able to put together three periods of complete hockey, according to Coach Tim Ames.

Ames’ team quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead when Mitchell Holt took a pass from Seth Farrah to get the scoring started.

Later in the first, Garrett Gillis continued his scoring streak when he found the back of the net, helped out by Alex Jennings and Ryan Eyler.

The second period brought some trouble and the team saw nine penalties, which allowed West Ottawa the opportunity to tie the game with two power play goals.

But the third period started and Flat Rock-Airport got back to its scoring ways.

Jennings added a goal to his assist to put the Jets back on top. He was unassisted.

Gillis added his second of the game, assisted by Farrah, and minutes later Eyler scored on a turnover deep in the Ottawa zone, assisted by Farrah to secure the victory.

“It was finally nice to see our team put together three complete periods of hockey,” Ames said. “We overcame a heavily penalized second period too.”

Goaltender Mike Vella had the win in net. It was his best performance of the season, according to Ames.

On Friday, the Jets suffered a 7-2 loss to Hudsonville.

The team trailed 2-1 after the first period and the lone goal was scored by Sam Farrah, assisted by Seth Farrah.

The second period brought more trouble, and the Jets saw four Hudsonville goals in four minutes, to take a 6-2.

Gillis added a third-period goal, assisted by Sam Farrah and Ryan Feroni.

Ames said that if not for the four-minute stretch in the second period, the game could have gone either way.

He added that it was nice to see the line of Sam Farrah, Seth Farrah, and Gillis come together and start clicking.

On Dec. 4, the Jets secured a 4-3 overtime victory over Cabrini after 53 shots on net.

The team jumped to a one goal lead when Gillis scored unassisted midway through the first period. Eyler added a score in the second period, assisted by Austin Jacobs and Alex Jennings.

Cabrini responded with three goals early in the third period to tie the game to take the 3-2 lead but the Jets were not finished.

Sam Farrah, helped out by Gillis and James Todd, tied the game.

The Jets dominated overtime, blasting shots at Cabrinis’s goaltender.

Eyler finally found the back of the net, unassisted for his second of the night and the Flat Rock victory.

The Jets outshot Cabrini 53-30 and did not allow a shot on goal in overtime.

The Jets (3-6) traveled to Riverview last night.
