GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Woodhaven smacks Grosse Ile

After beating powerful Detroit Country Day School in its season-opener, the Woodhaven Girls basketball team went to Grosse Ile Tuesday night and won its second game of the year, beating the host Red Devils 58-44.

Grosse Ile led 14-13 at the end of the first half, but lost their lead as the game went on.

“We came out strong in the first quarter,” Red Devils Coach Sandy Tobin said. “We played great defense and hustled to every ball.”

Defense was an area the team had been working hard on all summer long. The team returned all players from last season and Tobin is excited about the scoring and defensive package they have put together to help win games.

But a strong Woodhaven team, who is coming off a 22-win season last year, took advantage of Grosse Ile mistakes in the second half and took a 17-point lead after the end of the third quarter.

The Warriors went on a 20-5 run in the third quarter and the Red Devils were unable to recover.

“Grosse Ile played us very tough,” Woodhaven Coach Rodney Scharboneau said. “But our kids responded nicely to the challenge and stepped up their effort in the second half to take the game.”

The Red Devils battled back in the fourth quarter, but the Warrior lineup proved too strong. Alex Carney finished the night with 18 points, nine rebounds, and five steals.

Allison Manning had 18 points for the Warriors, the best of her career. She netted three triples in the first half and added one more in the second.

Cassie Breen added 12 points and six assists, Brianna Brennan had nine points and snagged six rebounds and Jessica Koss had three points. Hailey Leidel added two points.

Grosse Ile plays again Dec. 14 at Ladywood high school, while the Warriors faced Riverview Friday night.
