Senior Mike Williams and junior Dom Moore – two members of Downriver’s top scoring line from last year – return to the Woodhaven hockey team’s line-up this season, giving Coach Bryan Sullivan’s team a leg up on most teams.

Williams and Moore each had 30 goals a season ago while playing with the now-graduated Joe Taurence.

Senior Cody Hastings will step in to center the two high-scorers this year.

While that threesome will be looked to provide big offense kick, the rest of the team will pack its lunch pail each night, according Sullivan.

“This is a very hard-working, blue-collar group,” the veteran coach said. “It’s not the most gifted play-making team I have had, but they’ve got great attitudes and, man, do they work hard.”

Joining Williams, Moore and Hastings at forward for the Warriors this year will be four more seniors, three juniors a sophomore and a freshman.

Eric Long will center returnees senior Matt Faremouth and junior Jake Swindle.

Sophomore Billy Brock will center freshman Alex Robinson and junior Matt Bederka.

Senior Blaise Varady will center senior Trevor Kowalczyk and junior Brett Gomolak.

The most intriguing player of that group is Bederka, whose small stature belies his abilities.

Sullivan said the tricky little junior may find himself playing on the top line along with Williams and Moore and he could see time at defense, where he stood out during the Warriors five-team scrimmage.

Woodhaven’s defensive pairings are seniors Mike Perry and Mitch Cannon; seniors Jake Hernandez and Jake Moore; and senior Vinny Vassallo and sophomore Adam Pettit.

Junior Trevor Monaco returns in goal and he will be joined by fellow 11th-grader Steve Hurley.

The Warriors, who battled Grosse Point South for the top spot in the Michigan Metro League last season, will try to do so again this year. In addition, the Downriver League has begun sponsoring hockey this year and so the Warriors will compete with Trenton, Wyandotte, Allen Park, Anderson and Carlson for that league title.

The Warriors start the season at home tonight when St. Clair Shores comes to call.
