After making one great save after another and keeping her team in the game, Trenton senior keeper Christina Wynn reached for the sky and this time came up empty. Dexter’s Louisa Judge lofted a direct kick from about 35 yards out that floated over the outreached arms of Wynn and landed just below the crossbar and into the back of the net to give Dexter a 2-1 lead with just 2:43 left in the game.

The Dreadnaughts ran out the clock and Trenton fell 2-1 in a Division 2 Regional semifinal game at Farmington.

“We wanted to play to our strengths and attack their weaknesses,” said Trenton Coach Mike Hatfield, whose Trojans lost to Marian in last year’s regional semifinal. “We beat them 3-1 earlier in the season and beating a team of that level twice in a season is never easy.”

Hatfield said it was huge to get the early 1-0 lead on the penalty kick but the biggest test in soccer is what happens right after you score. And Trenton didn’t exactly pass that test as the Dreads came right back with the equalizer.

“The last 10 minutes of the game I think they had more energy and were beating us to the ball,” he said. “It was a very well-played game between two good teams.”

Hatfield kicked plenty of praise to Wynn, who played another solid goal in net for the Trojans.

“She made some big saves, especially late in the game to keep it at 2-1,” he said.

The Trojans, who finish the season at 20-3-1, reached No. 4 in the state in Division 2 and defeated Carlson 6-0 for the program’s seventh consecutive district title. They also have won three consecutive league titles.

Dexter will face Marian (21-0) in the finals at 6 p.m. on Friday, back at Farmington. The Mustangs defeated Allen Park 8-0 in the first semifinal game at Farmington. The game lasted less than a minute into the second half when the Mustangs scored their eighth goal of the season for the mercy win.

“Yeah, that’s going to be a tough game,” said Dexter Coach Scott Forrester. “But right now we just want to savior this win.”

Forrester’s Dreadnaughts lost to Trenton in their home opener at the start of the season but it was Dexter’s third game in four days. The Dreads were a little more rested this time around and it showed at the end of the game.

“I think we wore them down a little bit at the end,” he said. “They subbed as much as we did. I just think we played with our heart and wanted it really bad.”

With 10 minutes to go in the second half, Wynn made the save of the game to keep the score at 1-1 with a diving save off a rocket shot from about 15 yards out. The Dreadnaughts had been coming fast and furious over the previous 10 minutes with several quality scoring chances.

Earlier in the half, it was Trenton that mounted several chances to break the 1-1 deadlock but Dexter turned those runs into missed opportunities.

While the first half provided a goal for each team, the second half provided a lot more action, excitement and scoring chances – especially from the Dreadnaughts who took over midway through the half and never relented. It was pretty clear early in the second half that the next goal could very well be the difference – and that ended up being the case.

The first half of the first half was an even game with few quality chances by either side. Dexter’s Morgan Esch fired a shot from about 15 yards out, but Wynn handled that scoring chance at around the 25-minute mark. With 16:30 left in the half, Dexter’s Emma Ripka crashed into Wynn but the Trenton keeper was able to hold on to the ball and prevent a goal.

Trenton’s best scoring opportunity in the first half came with 14:46 left in the half and the Trojans cashed it in. McKenna Mahoney was knocked down in the box giving Trenton a penalty kick.

Junior Sara Vinca put a low hard shot to the right of Dexter keeper Caitlin Micallef that found the corner to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.

It didn’t last long.

Less than a minute later, a great run by the Dreads forced Wynn out of the net. The senior keeper made the initial play but couldn’t hold the ball, which rolled to her right and right to the foot of Dexter’s Emma Ripka, who placed it in the open net to tie the game at 1-1.
