New Boston Huron headed to Riverview on Tuesday night with a chance to sweep the regular-season series between the two Huron League rivals. When the teams met last month the Chiefs scored four goals and allowed only one. This time around Huron was kept off the board by a determined Pirates squad. On the other end of the field, Riverview scored twice in the first half and held on for a 2-0 victory. For the Bucs (8-4, 5-2 Huron League), it was Lilly Wiotiwcz who found the back of the net first. Her goal came with about 10 minutes left in the first half. Roughly three minutes later, pressure in front of the Huron net ultimately led to a goal from Riverview freshman Anastasia Stergiadis and the hosts went up 2-0. “It was the best game they’ve played all year,” said Bucs Coach Pete Cano of his team. “We’re starting to peak at the right time.” Cano said that his younger players have improved quite a bit since the last meeting with Huron. “Our freshmen are starting to pick it up too,” he said. “They’re doing a very good job. I have four solid freshmen on the team and they’re all very talented…They’re learning very quick.” Before Tuesday night, the Chiefs had cruised past their last five league opponents by a combined score of 38-0. Huron Coach Dan Rossow said Tuesday’s game was an “eye opener” as his group fell short of matching Riverview’s intensity. “They were a lot more passionate than we were today and they totally outworked us that entire first half,” Rossow said. “I was proud of the way we played the second half, but (we) just couldn’t finish today.” Bucs goalkeeper Mallory Gardocki earned the shutout, while Sabrina Cady was in goal for the Chiefs. Both teams were set to play a league game again the next day, as Riverview was scheduled to host Carleton Airport and Huron was scheduled to visit Milan.
