An early-season Huron League showdown pitted the Red Devils of Grosse Ile against the host Rams of Flat Rock on Tuesday.

It was a tightly-contested, back-and-forth affair, but it ended with Grosse Ile holding on for a 4-3 victory.

The Devils opened up the scoring in the top half of the third inning, as Flat Rock starter Nick Kopp threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded, allowing all runners to move up and Tristen Mehall came in to score.

But the Rams answered back in the bottom half of the frame. Kopp scored on a bases-loaded walk to Brady Flack, from Grosse Ile starter Jacob Reeves. Then it was Jake Green singling to score Jacob Mayer and it gave Flat rock a 2-1 lead.

The Rams nearly made it 3-1 on the same play, but Seth Bogataj was thrown out at home trying to score from second.

After a scoreless fourth, Grosse Ile reclaimed the lead with three runs in the fifth, thanks to a bases-loaded walk to Owen Wiewiura, scoring Joey Lepidi. It was followed by a two-run single up the middle from Owen's brother Jake Wiewiura, giving the Devils a 4-2 lead.

Flat Rock got one more in the home half of the sixth inning, on a sacrifice fly from Brock Mullins that scored Nate Simons. But a Rams comeback was not in the cards on Tuesday, as Matthew Groat shut the door in the seventh and solidified a Grosse Ile victory.

Devils Coach Mario Garza talked about what he liked from his starter Reeves, who went six innings and allowed the three runs (two earned) on three hits.

"He came in and threw a great game tonight, he executed the game plan that we had," Garza said. "The biggest change from him this season is the maturity to keep that composure. If something isn't going his way, he stays focused and gets the job done, and that's why he's been successful."

"(Nick Kopp) started for them and he did a great job, our hitters struggled early on," he said. "But the biggest thing is they just kept pushing it and grinding out every play, every at-bat. And our defense was outstanding as well."

On the other side, Flat Rock Coach Steve Ernest had little to no negative things to say about the way his team played.

"They probably made one or two more plays than we did," Ernest said. "We had one inning where we didn't make a play, with the passed ball. But hey, that's baseball."

Kopp went 4.2 innings for Flat Rock and scattered just three runs over three hits, striking out eight Grosse Ile hitters. Ernest also talked about his decision to pull his starter in the fifth inning with just under 80 pitches thrown.

"His pitch count was getting up there. My philosophy has always been with younger, inexperienced arms, especially in a bit cooler weather, to not stretch them out close to 100 pitches," he said.

"We were a pretty mixed bag offensively I thought," Ernest added. "We had some guys reaching and dipping, causing a lot of weak fly balls. -- It's tough because it's still early. There's going to be a lot of growth and changes throughout the season. A couple plays here or there and Mario (Garza) and I are trading places."

These two teams will meet again on May 3 at Grosse Ile.

The Devils were set to be at New Boston Huron the next day and Flat Rock was scheduled to welcome in Tecumseh on Saturday.
