FARMINGTON HILLS >> When teams have lengthy lapses, to let opponents hang around in games, don’t be surprised if one of them takes you up on the offer.

The No. 4-ranked Lakers of Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes went into one of their prolonged funks for the first three minutes of the fourth quarter in Saturday’s Catholic League C-D tournament quarterfinal, letting Riverview Gabriel Richard have some hope.

And the Pioneers took advantage, using an 8-0 run to start the quarter to slice Lakes’ lead in half, before a pair of jumpers by Isabelle Kline finally sealed the deal.

The Lakers (14-3) won, 47-31, advancing them to Tuesday’s first semifinal game at Warren Regina, where they will take on Wixom St. Catherine.

Advancing was looking less and less secure, as the Pioneers (4-13) dominated the first three minutes of the final quarter, cutting an 18-point lead down to just 10 with five minutes left.

Both coaches tried to call a timeout at the same time, Lakes’ Steve Robak to regroup his squad, and Gabriel Richard’s Laura Guzman to keep reminding her kids that they were right in it.

“We just talked in the timeout about how they’re playing like they want to win, and we’re playing like we already won. I just kind of challenged them to see what kind of team they really want to be. Do you just want to coast through this, and just try to get the win, or do you want to come out and execute?” Robak said. “And I felt like, after that time out, we were much, much better in our effort, our execution — just basketball stuff, stuff you have to be good at, this time of year, especially when we have a team like we have. We have some pretty big goals. So they responded, and I was happy with that response.”

The response came from Isabelle Kline — who led all scorers with 20 points — as she nailed a pair of long jump shots from the left wing, ending Richard’s momentum, and pumping the lead back up to 14.

“She got her feet set, took a nice shot. She's been working hard on her shot. It’s been showing in practice, and now in games, so I think she’s starting to feel a little more comfortable as a freshman. She missed such a long stretch at the start of the season with an injury, and she’s feeling better now, getting her legs,” Robak said of Kline, who has taken over the role of Lakes’ second scoring option, with Catherine Weddle sidelined with a knee injury.

“As a freshman, the game moves pretty fast sometimes, but she seems to be making nice strides.”

For Gabriel Richard, the whole season has been like that — where things move fast for a young squad.

“I think once they realize they’re still in the game — like 10 points is nothing. But to us, 10 points is a lot, especially when we’re fighting for three quarters,” Guzman said.

“I think it’s hard when kids play the scoreboard, and not necessarily thinking that you can cut a lead in half. Basketball’s a game of spurts, and I think my kids just got so worked up that they were losing, and not trying to chip away at it, that we just kind of panicked, instead of settling down, hitting the middle.”

Her squad did manage to keep the ball in the middle and handle the press for that short spurt in the fourth quarter, after being pestered by the Lakers’ press for the vast majority of the game to that point. Once the Lakers got momentum turned back around, though, it was more or less over.

“I think ultimately, all year, we’ve struggled, and we’ve played without the lead, so I’ve always tried to have them chipping away at it. I think it comes with experience, and being mentally tough. We are young, as much as I don’t like to use that,” Guzman said. “I just think ultimately, whether it’s two points or 10 points, they just ultimately freak out that we’re losing. And they just tighten up.

“And they (the Lakers) did a very good job. He didn’t come out of it (the press) no matter what the score was, and his kids just kept at it. I think they got all the points, pretty much, off of steals, rather than actually running the offense.”

Kayla Sanders added 12 points for Lakes, while Sydney Balan led Richard with 11.
