Red Devils earn 1st regular-season win over Rams since 2010-11 season

Last season, the Rams of Flat Rock reigned supreme atop a competitive Huron League with the Red Devils of Grosse Ile right behind them.

While neither team has been off to a hot start this season, there was still an intensity present in the Grosse Ile gym on Friday night when the two teams competed to start Huron League play.

With hot shooting and a strong defensive effort, the Devils (1-2, 1-0 Huron League) were able to take down the Rams (0-4, 0-1 Huron League), 48-36, to earn their first win of the year.

Overall, it marked Grosse Ile's first regular-season win over the Rams since the 2010-11 season.

“I’m very excited,” said Devils Coach Darla Palamara after her first career win with the team. Palamara took over the team before the season after spending time as the junior varsity coach.

“The girls were in shape,” she said. “They took a million shots in practice this week, and today their shooting increased astronomically.”

As a team, the Grosse Ile shot 57 percent from the floor on the evening.

The offensive effort was not focused around one particular shooter but instead spread to all players on the floor. In the first quarter, each of the host's five buckets were scored by different players.

Flat Rock rushed out to an early lead thanks to six first-quarter points from Paige Nemeth. The senior point guard finished with a game-high 14 points.

Grosse Ile answered back in a big way by outscoring the Rams 19-9 in the second quarter. Junior guard Madison Swick scored eight of her 11 points on the night in the second quarter alone.

In the second half, the Rams were able to get within seven points midway through the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.

Junior center Charlotte Will played a big part on both sides of the ball as a force in the paint. Along with a great effort rebounding, she finished with 11 points.

“Eleven points, tons of rebounds, and her tenacious defense was so important,” said Palamara of Will. “She stepped up.”

With their fourth straight loss, defending league champion Flat Rock is left still searching for their first win of the season.

“This is always a tough place to play,” said Rams coach Marc Villemure. “I thought we did some really nice things tonight. We just didn’t finish.”

Flat Rock will look for their first win of the season on Tuesday against Arbor Preparatory High School. Grosse Ile will face Gibraltar Carlson at home on Thursday.
