BOWLING: Marysville primed for regional

Debbie Lietzow couldn't have asked for much more from her Marysville bowling teams during the regular season.

Lietzow, who coaches the boys' and girls' teams, hopes the success will carry over into the regional tournament, scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

"Both of our teams participated in weekend tournaments this year," Lietzow said. "We hoped this would give the teams a better opportunity at regionals, having more experience bowling in larger alleys and competing with larger schools.

"We feel both the boys and girls teams have a good chance at making it to the state finals."

Marysville will compete at the Division 2 regional at Oak Lanes in Westland. The top three teams and the top 10 individuals advance to the state finals in Waterford March 1-2.

Both Vikings' squads went 9-3 in division play. The girls finished second in the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division, while the boys came in third. Both finished second at the division meet.

Balance may be the quality that has carried the boys' team so far.

"We were very pleased with how well the boys' team worked together during the regular season," Lietzow said. "They had a solid five-man lineup with several strong alternates."

Sophomore Brandon Armstead is averaging 191 a game with a high game of 258, and had the highest series, 493, in the MAC Gold.

Junior Lenny McIntyre is averaging 186 for Marysville, with a high game of 238. Senior and team captain Austin Bedford has a 180 season average, with a high game of 226 and had a high series of 437.

On the girls' side, the Vikings overcame some youth issues to put together a fine season.

"We were very pleased with the girls' team," Lietzow said. "The seven-person team only had four returning players.

"The girls worked together well."

Junior Mackenzie Visga carries a 163 season average and had the highest game (257) in the girls' division, and had a high series of 420. Junior Taylor Volpe averages 154 with a high game of 209.

Senior Jennifer Lietzow, the captain, averages 147 with a high game of 191, and a high series of 347.

Port Huron High and Port Huron Northern will compete in the Division 1 regional at 5-star Lanes in Sterling Heights.

Port Huron High's boys' team finished in fourth place in the MAC White Division. Collin Smith rolled a 454 series in a recent loss to Sterling Heights. Jonah Bell's season-high game of 288 ranks among the state leaders.

The Big Reds' girls' team finished fourth in the MAC White. Chelsea Kelly had a 184 game and 374 series in a recent match.

Port Huron Northern boys' and girls' teams finished last and fifth, respectively, in the MAC White. Kayla Gregoire paced the Huskies with a 176 game and 350 series recently against Roseville.
