The Croswell-Lexington Pioneers threw a shutout at Richmond in the first quarter Wednesday, and then had to hold on as the Blue Devils chipped away in the late innings.

OK, bad analogy. It’s basketball we’re talking about here. But it’s true Cros-Lex held a 17-0 lead after one quarter, but had to hang on for a 43-41 win in a key Blue Water Area Conference game.

The win creates a first-place tie between Cros-Lex, Richmond and Yale, each of which is 8-3 in the conference.

“We knew it would be close,” Richmond Coach Jim Barnes said about the race. “Traditionally in the BWAC, nothing is decided until the last two weeks. It won’t be decided until Feb. 28. We’ve been getting better; other teams have been too.”

The Blue Devils’ frantic comeback let to a wild final couple of minutes. Richmond tied the game for the first time, 38-38, on a free throw by Keenan McCloskey with 4:47 to play in the fourth quarter.

Neither team scored again until there was 1:23 to play when Justin Weaver hit two free throws to give Richmond its first lead of the game at 40-38.

The teams traded free throws to make it 41-39 for Richmond with 44 seconds to play. Dan Fistler missed two free throws with 38 seconds to play for the Blue Devils.

Cros-Lex’s Anwar Childers drained a 3-pointer from the wing to put his team back on top, 42-41 with 26 seconds to play.

Richmond missed a shot in the lane with six second left and had to foul. Childers split a pair to make it 43-41. Richmond inbounded with 4.3 seconds to play, got the ball up court and Dustin Leach drew rim on a long 3-point attempt.

Barnes noted that the Blue Devils missed three of four free throws in the game’s waning moments.

“It would have been nice to execute in the final four minutes, which we did not,” he said. “We were 15-30 from the foul line and you don’t deserve to win when you do that.

“We made a couple critical mistakes. (Childers) makes a three with 26 seconds left and nobody’s guarding him. It’s a shame to play that hard and play in a game that big and do those kinds of things.”

The Pioneers came out on fire to start the game, with Trevor Sheridan hitting a 3-pointer and Nathan Guitar hitting a pair for a 9-0 lead.

Cros-Lex played stifling defense in the quarter and then started going inside for its points. When Reid Brywig hit a turnaround jumper just before the end of the first quarter, the Pioneers had a stunning 17-0 lead after eight minutes.

“We talked about being the aggressor,” Barnes said. “I thought they certainly were the aggressor. They were not afraid of the moment and I thought we were a bit. We are pretty young and I thought we kind of shied away from the moment. It’s really miraculous, a testament to our kids’ character, that we made it a game.”

The Blue Devils finally scored 23 seconds into the second quarter. They would go on to outscore the Pioneers 10-5 in the quarter, but Cros-Lex was still up 22-10 at halftime.

Barnes didn’t have any magic words for his team at halftime.

We explained to ’em, we couldn’t even think about winning. We appeared to be scared out of our minds. We didn’t play hard, didn’t play aggressive. They beat us to everything.

“We told ’em, ‘If we’re going to get beat, let’s get beat playing the way we’re supposed to play.’”

Instead of building off of their momentum, the Devils saw the Pioneers open the third quarter by making three more 3-pointers to take a 31-12 lead.

Jake Schmidt took over for Richmond. The sophomore forward, blanked in the first half, powered his way to a 12-point third quarter, including two 3-point plays and going 6-6 at the line. The Blue Devils outscored the Pioneers 22-16 to close the gap to 38-32 going into the fourth quarter.

That’s when Richmond outscored Cros-Lex 8-0 to start the fourth and set up the wild finish. Barnes was still shaking his head after the game about the Blue Devils’ ability to come back from such a big hole.

“Our kids played really hard the last 12 minutes,” he said. “I’ve been coaching 23 years and I’ve never seen a team come back from a 19-point deficit really in eight minutes.

“To look at the end of the first quarter and see a zero on the scoreboard, for 16-year-old kids to come back from that is pretty neat.”

Schmidt led Richmond with those 12 points, while Justin Weaver had eight and Dave Schroudt had seven.

Guitar led Cros-Lex with 17 points.

The Blue Devils play at Almont on Friday, while Cros-Lex meets Capac.
