LAKE ORION — There was a blast from the past Wednesday, as Alumni Night was celebrated at Lake Orion High School.

The annual event brought back former wrestlers from decades past for the Dragons, including some members of the 1990 state championship team.

Those alumni got a chance to see another state championship-caliber team, which showed no mercy in the four-team quadrangular.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central, ranked No. 3 in the state in Division 1, roughed up Rochester, 51-15, before bruising up Lake Orion, 51-10.

Lake Orion topped Troy, 50-24, in a non-league match, and Rochester also beat Troy, 68-12.

Lake Orion won nine of 14 matches against Troy and was never threatened. But when the Dragons took on the Shamrocks, it was a different story, just as the Falcons had also found out.

“I liked our effort,” Catholic Central coach Mitch Hancock said. “Any time these guys step on the mat, they give their all. (But) I think we could’ve been a little sharper.”

Not from the viewpoints of Rochester or Lake Orion, which were helpless against the stronger Shamrocks.

“CC is good,” Lake Orion coach Cory Kuzinski said.

The Shamrocks started on the Dragons and never let up, forging a 27-0 lead before Lake Orion could score.

A.J. Fligger stopped the bleeding with a heart-thumping victory over highly-rated Justin Melick in the 140-pound class.

“It was a fun one to watch,” Kuzinski said. “It’s a real good win for Fligger, a confidence booster. He said he was so tired at the end that (the) last takedown was just on muscle memory.”

Adam Gros (171) and Demetri Hudson (160) also posted victories for the Dragons, whose Willie Stewart took Oakland County champ and state-ranked Mike Kinville to overtime before falling, 12-10, in their 215-pound battle.

Stewart led 10-7 near the end before Kinville, who was hit with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, escaped and tied with a takedown to send the match into overtime. Kinville secured the victory with a takedown of his own in overtime.

“Mike’s a better wrestler than that,” Hancock said. “I think he got a little frustrated. He was giving up points.”

Catholic Central, though, was still on its mark. Doug Eldridge 145), Ken Bade (112), Alec Mooradian (125), Charlie Joseph (130), Nick Mason (135), Gerid Gee (152), Miles Trealout (189) and Dave Knuth (285) were solid against the Dragons and Rochester, which also couldn’t stop the Shamrock express.

“I think we did well against CC,” Rochester coach Frank Lafferty said. “The guys were outclassed, but they didn’t quit.”

Catholic Central hosts the Super Duals Saturday with St. Edwards of Ohio, Clarkston, Hartland and Temperance Bedford among a strong field of wrestling teams.

“We’ve got our hands full,” said Hancock, who is taking on all comers in a promising season which could end up in Battle Creek. “You got to test these guys ... so when you get to the state tournament, you’ve seen everybody.”
