After a sluggish start, Woodhaven edged Dearborn Heights Crestwood 2-0 Friday in the D1, District 6 final to earn its third consecutive district championship.

Sophomore Caitlin Brown and freshman Olivia Alexander scored goals for the Warriors, and keeper senior Kerstyn Williams made a clutch save on fellow senior Heba Abdallah's penalty kick with 6:24 remaining to preserve the shutout.

“That’s the biggest accomplishment … move on to regionals again,” Woodhaven Coach Scott Hoye said. “… This year, another crack at it and we got to see what we can do. It’s one of our goals for the year. We didn’t get the other goal, but we got this goal, so now we got to move on and see what we can do going forward.”

Woodhaven will face Saline in D1, Regional 2 semifinal Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Dearborn High School. The Hornets’ sting has been too much for the Warriors this decade after ending their season in 2013 (district opener), 2014 (district semifinal) and 2015 (regional semifinal).

Perhaps third time will be the charm for Woodhaven and an elusive regional championship. The Warriors made it to the regional semifinals in 2015 and lost to Canton, the eventual state runner-up, in last year’s regional final.

“The biggest thing is take advantage of the situations we’re in,” Hoye said. “We’ve had times to finish, we didn’t finish. We had times to stop, we didn’t stop. Momentum, we haven’t set momentum. If we just get wiser and just finish those off, I think our experiences now give us that better push. We just gotta play defense better.”

Offense was at a premium for Woodhaven and Crestwood just one day after both teams combined to score 14 goals in the regional semifinal.

The Warriors and Chargers were locked in a scoreless affair through 58 minutes, when Brown found the back of the net with her head to put the Warriors up 1-0. Alexander widened the lead nearly nine minutes later with a goal of her own, putting the game nearly out of reach.

Crestwood made things interesting late when Abdallah was given a penalty shot, but she could not get it past Williams, giving Woodhaven its 15th shutout of the season.

“I thought my girls executed,” Crestwood Coach Mike Haidar said. “I felt like it was (a) neck-and-neck type of game, I know they had a little bit of an edge on us. But my girls had a mountain to climb, and I feel like they didn’t just climb it, they owned it. They owned up today, the opportunity, and I couldn’t be happier to be honest.

“… We kind of found a weakness that (Woodhaven) had and we started to exploit it as the game went on. It’s unfortunate that it wasn’t our day today — hats off to Woodhaven, they didn’t stop, they have some quality players, quality team — but that takes nothing away from my girls today.”

Haidar said Crestwood’s season had a rocky start with injuries, but an 8-0 run to end the year turned the tide.

“Good things started to happen and we ended up (in the district final) playing another very good team,” he said.

Crestwood graduates eight seniors but retains 13 underclassmen, including eight juniors. Haidar is confident playing Woodhaven in a tightly contested title game will help carry the Chargers into 2018.

“It does, it has to. … We’re a young team, we’re losing a couple starting seniors and the girls, my junior class, my sophomore class, I got a freshman too that are very strong, this should motivate them,” Haidar said. “Who wants to lose? Who wants that gut feeling, someone’s stabbing you in the gut where you feel like you can’t do anything about it?

“Now here’s an opportunity where you can do something about it. You have eight, nine months to prepare, and it’s what you do then that will eventually tell you what happens at the start of the season. … This will definitely (motivate them), I just told the girls, ‘Make sure this lights up a flame, and once that flame is lit up, no one can stop you.’ ”
