After beating Dearborn High last week, Edsel Ford welcomed in the rival Pioneers on Wednesday.

As the game got started, the Thunderbirds looked poised for a regular-season sweep of Dearborn, as they sent all nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored three runs.

But when it was all said and done, the Pioneers celebrated a 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Edsel’s home field.

“We lost to them on Thursday last week at our place,” said Dearborn Coach Eric Jenks. “To beat them at their place is great. It’s a big, big win.

“We were down 3-0 and to battle back the whole game and finally get the lead in the seventh is awesome.”

On May 11, the T-Birds (9-7-1) knocked off the Pioneers (13-8) by a score of 7-2 at Dearborn.

In Wednesday’s rematch, Edsel took a 4-3 lead into the top of the seventh.

Ben Clark, who had a huge day for the Pioneers, led off the inning with a base hit. Mikey Phillips followed with a walk and Adrianno Murillo singled.

With Clark on third, a passed ball suddenly gave him a chance to score.

The sophomore bolted for home and slid head first into the plate. He got by T-Birds pitcher Trevor Blatterline, who was covering, and made it a 4-4 game with his team-high 28th run of the year.

Soon after, the same opportunity arose for Phillips when another pitch went to the backstop.

The Ferris State football-signee charged toward the plate and came across with a head-first slide that gave Dearborn the go-ahead run.

It was also a bit of redemption for Phillips, who started on the mound and allowed four earned runs in two innings. Clark came on in relief and held the hosts scoreless the rest of the way.

In the bottom of the seventh, the T-Birds put the tying run on base when Anthony Rozycki hit a two-out single. But Clark struck out the next batter and ended the contest.

For the night Clark had eight strike outs in five innings and allowed five hits and two walks.

At the plate Clark was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Two of his hits were doubles.

Early in the contest, Edsel’s first three batters reached base and scored thanks to Tyler Jackson, Luke Maness and Nick Wreford.

Jackson and Wreford both walked and Maness tripled.

For the game, Maness with 3-for-4 with a run scored and was a home run shy of the cycle.

Also in the first inning for the T-Birds, A.J. White walked, Austin McCaig singled and Ryan Strojny walked.

The visitors were able to even things up in the top of the third.

Clark and Phillips both walked and then scored on a Murillo double, while Murillo came home on ground ball hit by Donovan Richardson and tied the game at 3-3.

Edsel regained the lead in the bottom half of the third when White scored on a sacrifice by Strojny.

Both teams had scoring chances the rest of the way but neither cashed in again until the Pioneers went ahead in the final inning.

The T-Birds loaded the bases in both the fourth and sixth innings but couldn’t get another run across.

“We sat back on our heels,” said Edsel coach George Kontos. “We had opportunities to drive in runs and we didn’t execute and it’s something that our team has been battling all year.

“It’s a good learning (experience). No matter how good you look early in the game it’s a seven-inning game…And sometimes the hardest lessons are learned by losing a close one.”

Next up for Dearborn is a doubleheader on Saturday at Farmington Hills Harrison and Edsel was set to host Fordson for a doubleheader the day before.
