After chasing the two-time defending Division 2 state champion Carlson Marauders all season, the Catholic League champion Divine Child competitive cheerleading team finally caught them last week – at the best time possible.

The Falcons used a huge third-round score to upend the champs at the Division 2 regional hosted by Ortonville-Brandon High School.

Divine Child and Carlson were only fractions of a point apart through the first two rounds of competition, but DC outdid their top-ranked rival 317.8-312.5 in the final rotation to win the regional crown.

Divine Child’s final score was 776.85. Carlson’s was 771.16. Allen Park finished third and Wyandotte Roosevelt fourth as the top four teams in each regional qualify for the state final this weekend in Grand Rapids.

Saturday’s result reversed the result of the weekend before when Divine Child finished second to Carlson at the district competition.

The regional champion Falcons are Kristen Saunders, Melanie Pierce, Brianne Pengrazzi, Alexandria Greco, Jennifer Cimino, Dana Cameron, Olivia Winey, Kelsie Hoffman, Alexandria Thomas, Emily Penny, Emily Kiefer, Rachael Joseph, Olivia Grozenski, Sara Forystek, Mary Beuckalaere, Cindy Vink, Jessica Semaan, Megan Schroeder, Kaelah O’Brien, Maggie Marion, Hanna Korpics and Laura Kastler.

The Division 2 state finals start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids.

Joining Divine Child, Carlson, Allen Park and Roosevelt there will be DeWitt, Grand Rapids Christian, Mt. Pleasant and St. Joseph.
