It was a tight race at the Western Wayne Athletic Conference League Meet on Friday and host Belleville outlasted a spirited effort from a few local schools to bring home the team championship.

The Tigers finished with a meet-high 458 points and just edged Edsel Ford (450) and Dearborn (419) for the crown.

Fordson finished fourth with 182 points followed by Redford Thurston, Garden City, Crestwood and Redford Union.

A balanced effort from Edsel Ford fell just eight points short of a league championship and the runner-up T-birds were led by Noah Kubitz, who turned in their lone first-place finish in the 100-free and a second-place finish in the 50-free.

The Thunderbirds had several second-place finishes, including Mitchell Hall in the 100-free and 200-free, Zach Matthews in the 200 IM, Chris Matthews in the backstroke, the 200 freestyle relay (Chris Matthews, Zach Matthews, Hall, Kubitz) and the 400 freestyle relay (Hall, Zach Matthews, Jon Scott, Kubitz).

Zach Matthews (butterfly) and Hunter Jackman (breaststroke) each placed third and the medley relay team of Chris Matthews, Andre Shestani, Max Rogula and Luke Garza also took bronze.

Jacob Brassel (200 IM) and Andrew Assenmacher (diving) each contributed fourth-place finishes for the T-birds.

Dearborn’s August McHugh was named Swimmer of the Meet with first-place finishes in all four of his events.

McHugh took first in the 200 IM and backstroke and was a member of Dearborn’s winning medley relay team with Nicholas Hopping, Alex Green and Sam Mousigian as well as the 200 freestyle relay group with Mousigian, Jordan Kinsey and Green.

Green also turned in an individual first-place finish for the Pioneers with his winning time in the 50-free to go along with a second-place finish in the butterfly.

Other top performers for Dearborn included Quentin Bruce in diving (second), Mousigian in the 50-free (third) and 100-free (fourth and Dan Dziewit in the 500-free (fourth).

Fordson’s Ryan Yazback turned in the Tractor’s best finish with a second-place finish in the 500-free.

Crestwood’s Anthony Delgreco finished fourth in the 50-free and the Chargers also took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (Mazen Perry, Gabe Mazner, Anthony Delgreco, Mazen Hijazi).
