The host Edsel Ford girls’ basketball team protected its home court against Lincoln Park in the first round of the district-tournament play Wednesday, beating the Rails 58-42.

The host team came back from an early deficit. At the end of the first quarter, Edsel found itself down 12-9. Li9ncoln Park’s lead was largely due to the early success of Lincoln Park senior guard Shanice Taylor.

“She’s one of the best players in our league and we are going to miss her,” said Lincoln Park coach Shaun Thacker. Taylor ended the game with 15 points, five rebounds and nine steals.

By halftime though, Edsel had regained the lead 28-24.

“Our full-court pressure wasn’t working, so once we pulled back on that, we were able to get some easy buckets,” said Edsel coach Janet Smith.

Leading the way for Edsel was Marisa Sauve. She flirted with a triple-double scoring 16 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.

Also contributing to the win were sophomore Kennedy Rankin and freshman Jaida Futch.

Rankin finished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven steals. Futch had 13 points and five steals.

When the Thunderbirds got rolling, they never looked back. They finished the game strong with 14 points the fourth quarter and only allowed eight.

Edsel will now face Allen Park on Wednesday to determine who will play in the tournament final.
