As it turns out, Birmingham Detroit Country Day boys basketball coach Kurt Keener will leave on top.

After 35 years, it was announced on Friday that Keener will be leaving Country Day to take a head coaching job at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Country Day athletic director and football coach Dan MacLean confirmed Keener was leaving in a text message early Friday afternoon.

Messages left for Keener and Desert Mountain Executive Director of Athletics Clif McKenzie weren’t immediately returned as of Friday afternoon.

Tom Negoshian, former North Farmington head coach and friend of Keener, said the 57-year old Keener has been talking about the move for years because his son lives in Arizona, and Keener decided now was the time to head west.

Keener leaves the state second on the all-time wins list with 677 wins and he won nine state championships at Country Day.

The last of those titles came this past March when he led the Yellowjackets to the Class B championship.
