TROY - Stoney Creek and Rochester battled back and forth all day long Saturday at the Division 1 Cheer regional at Troy Athens High School.

In the end, it was the Cougars that held off the competition to win a regional championship and move on to the state finals, which will be held Friday at the Grand Rapids Delta Plex.

Stoney Creek finished with a three-round team score of 775.64 points, edging out runner-up Rochester, which finished with 772.34 points. The Falcons, along with third-place Southgate-Anderson (768.64) and fourth-place Sterling Heights Stevenson (765.52), move on to the state finals.

Southgate-Anderson is the defending state champion. Stoney Creek won the 2010 title, while Rochester won it all in 2009.

Division 3 at Oxford

Defending state champion Richmond beat out Pontiac Notre Dame Prep to win the Division 3 regional championship at Oxford Saturday. The Blue Devils finished with 771.96 points, while Notre Dame Prep totaled 762.38. Both teams, along with Ovid-Elsie and Grosse Ile - who finished third and fourth - qualified for the state finals, which will be held in Grand Rapids on Saturday.
