DETROIT — Riverview Gabriel Richard and Royal Oak Shrine are familiar foes on the Ice.

Earlier in the year, Shrine got the better of Gabriel Richard. However on Saturday during the Divison 2 Catholic League Final at Joe Louis Arena, Gabriel Richard captured its third CHSL Division 2 Championship in four years behind the efforts of senior Garrett Yesue and Devin Dickow beating Shrine 6-1.

“I was so proud of these guys,” Gabriel Richard head coach Ricky Desana said. “We had to beat two big rivals to get here. We’ve just been playing really good hockey lately, and they deserve it.

“And getting three in four years is pretty special.”

For a better part of the season, Richard was without Yesue who suffered a concussion against Allen Park Cabrini. And in his second game back he made a definite impact for the Pioneers (13-11).

With just 3:00 into the first period, senior forward Garrett Yesue fired one home on the short side to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, senior forward Devin Dickow received a pass from sophomore Brendan Damron and junior John Louria and walked over to the top of the slot and fired a 2-0 goal short side.

“That first line is an awfully good line with Yesue back,” Desana said.

Yesue would strike against 2:00 minutes later, after intercepting an attempt to clear the puck by Shrine. As the puck swung around the back of the boards, Yesue jumped grabbed it from the middle of the circle and fired a shot past senior goaltender Hugo Stange to make it 3-0.

With 6:00 left in the period, Dickow, who is adjusting to forward from being a defensemen most of his career, rocketed down the right side creating a two-on-one and found Yesue who was trailing the play to complete his hat-trick at 4-0.

The two would hook up again midway into the second period on the short side. Dickow held the puck and kicked it out to Yesue who was waiting in the right circle and fired a wrist shot to make it 5-0.

Shrine made its first appearance in the CHSL Division 2 finals this season let the moment get the better of them according to head coach AJ Plaskey.

“We weren’t ready,” Plaskey said. “Being at Joe Louis for the Catholic League Championship, I thought our boys would be ready to go. We just got into a hole and couldn’t get out of it.

“We picked a bad day to have a bad game. A lot of things factored into it. But it was probably nerves and little bit of jitters and it all added up to a bad recipe for us.”

Shrine would jump on the board with two minutes left in the second period when junior forward Ryan Bradley offered a pass from behind goaltender Christian Spangler to Joe Nagle who fired the one timer to make it 5-1.

“Joe has had a real good year for us,” Plaskey said. “He’s had a good four years for us. He’s been a leader on and off the ice. He’s a tireless worker, and I’m not surprised he had our only goal.

As the period ended Richard would extend it’s lead back to five goals when Andrew Mancini scooped a loose puck from Stange as he was trying to cover it, and sent in the goal right before the whistle to make it 6-1.

Shrine will hope to rebound, build off a solid season, and refocus on the hunt for the playoffs against Birmingham Detroit Country Day Feb. 25.

Gabriel Richard will have to go through another rival, Riverview, Feb 25 to advance past the first round of the state playoffs.
