HOCKEY: Liggett spoils "Senior Night" in Lake Orion

BLOOMFIELD HILLS – The Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett Knights boys hockey team spoiled Senior Night for the Lake Orion Dragons, defeating the hosts 6-1 Thursday night.

The Knights started fast with Jake Jerome opening the scoring less than two minutes into the game when William Yates found him alone in front of the net, and Jerome spun and fired the puck into the top corner to open the scoring. Steve Campau made it 2-0 midway through the period, and then Jerome set up Yates with just under five minutes left in the period to make it 3-0 after one. The Knights would never look back after that.

“I thought we had a great first period, showed a lot of energy and moved the puck,” Knights head coach Robb McIntyre said. “We look good when we work hard, and when we don’t things can go either way,” he added.

The Dragons would settle in defensively the last two periods, taking away the prime scoring chances for Liggett and generally forcing the Knights to alter their game. “I thought they (Lake Orion) played pretty well, gapped pretty well coming into their zone. We had to do a little more dumping than I wanted to, and they back checked well. So even though we’d spring some rushes on them, they were getting back on our high guys,” McIntyre noted.

But they could never quite get their own offense going as Lordanthony Grissom, Josh Soyka and the rest of the Knights defense were able to shut down the Dragons for the most part. Lake Orion did get a bit of life late in the second period on a goal from Marc Kerchner who ripped a shot in off the post from the top of the right circle.

Kerchner’s goal made it 4-1 heading to third period, but the Knights started the final period strong, pinning the Dragons back until Vincent Scarfone was able to shake loose down low and find the back of the net to re-establish the Knights’ four goal lead.

Overall though, the Knights just had too much balance and depth as six different players scored for University Liggett with Manny Counsman and Alex Minanov picking up goals while ten different players got at least one point. Luke Soyka made 17 saves to pick up the win in goal.

“It was a little bit of everybody tonight,” McIntyre said adding that “Our scoring has been fairly spread out throughout the year.”

Overall, Dragons head coach Nick Field was a little disappointed with his team’s performance. “We played ok in the second and third periods,” Lake Orion head coach Nick Field said. “We know that we weren’t very good tonight, but you’re not going to be good every night. We’ll move on, forget about it tomorrow at practice and move on from there,” he added.

Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett improves to 12-8 overall as they look forward to the Trenton Showcase starting next Thursday where they take on Livonia Churchill. Lake Orion slips to 5-9-5 heading into Saturday’s OAA-MAC Challenge where they will face St. Clair Shores.
