FARMINGTON HILLS Seven or eight years ago, Farmington Harrison barely had a wrestling squad. Hawks coach Jim Stuef recalls those barren days of low numbers and competing in the shadows of the vaunted state-caliber football program at Harrison.
Now, the Hawks have strong numbers, a commitment to wrestling, with the blessings of football coach John Herrington, who watched the improving Hawks compete in an OAA Red double dual Wednesday at Harrison.
Im watching some of my football players, smiled Herrington. And although the Hawks took it on the chin twice, losing a 50-19 decision to state-ranked Clarkston and a 36-30 verdict to Rochester Adams, the Hawks wont be taken lightly this season.
Its a big step to move up in this division, said Stuef, noting that every team in the OAA Red has won a wrestling state championship with the exception of Harrison and Rochester, a current top-10 state-ranked team. I thought we had a chance against Adams. It came down to one match.
Were proud of our kids, but we still have a lot of ground to cover.
Clarkston earned a 44-15 decision over Lake Orion and Adams also notched a pair of wins, edging the Dragons 36-24 to go with its victory over the Hawks.
Against Harrison, Clarkston trailed 16-10 after Paskual Pjetrushi topped Kas Waitkus, 14-9, in the 152-pound class. Andrew Fialka (135), Bobby Mathieson (140) and LaroNe Mack (145) had won consecutive matches to put the Hakws in front.
But Clarkston, another top-10 ranked team in the state, applied its force with five straight victories four coming by fall and one by void.
Nick Vandermeer (160), Josh Cohoon (171), Chris Calvano (189) and Luis Reyes (285) put the match out of reach.
Today they started gelling as a team and cheering each other on, said Clarkston coach Derek Moscovic, noting the Hawks tenacity. Its a great squad, theyre not intimidated by anybody. They forced our guys to wrestle.
Clarkston got off to a quick start against Lake Orion with Brett Foltz (119), Cameron Wilkie (125), Mike Cardinale (130) and Jake Dionne (135) winning the first four matches as the Wolves never looked back.
The Dragons Charlie Highlen posted his 100th career victory by beating Will Tang of Rochester Adams in their 135-pound match. But Lake Orion, who had tied the score 27-27 with two matches remaining, couldnt keep up with the Highlanders, whose Justin Schofield (112) and Jake Anderson (119) closed the show with victories. Stephen Biebelhausen (125), Chris Mikhjian (140), Dillon Anderson (145), Jack Addy (152) and Andrew Sabuda were among other Highlanders who posted victories against Lake Orion.
Their 10th place in the (Oakland) county meet doesnt show how tough they are, Lake Orion coach Cory Kuzinski said. We knew it was going to be tight.
