South Lyon senior Jake Warren sent a backhand shot past the Heritage goalie's five hole in the 13th round of a shootout Friday evening and sophomore goalies Justin Zabinski stopped 11 of 13 shots during the shootout to propel the South Lyon Unified hockey team to a 5-4 victory over the Heritage Hawks in a contest played at the Saginaw-Bay Ice Arena.
South Lyon opened the scoring early in the first period, as Junior Dylan Cordes accepted a pass to the left of the Hawks goalie Kevin Cressey, from senior Mitch Paquette, who was positioned behind the net. Cordes deked Cressey to the ice and sent a backhand to the far side of the cage, junior forward Tyler Manasco also assisted on the play.
Heritage tied the game with just nine seconds remaining, as forward Tyler Angers picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in to beat Zabinski with a high shot just inside the post.
Shots were 10 for South Lyon and nine for Heritage in the evenly played period.
South Lyon picked up a penalty at the end of the first, fueling the momentum of the Hawks, and it did not take long for Heritage to capitalize on the opportunity, scoring at the 15:24 mark, as forward Sami Abedlaziz was alone to the right of Zabinski and backhanded a shot into the twine. The momentum continued as a mere 57 seconds later, as forward Jake Tweddle deflected a shot from the point from forward Tommy Munoz to quickly put the Hawks up by two goals, 3-1.
South Lyon cut the gap in half midway thought the period, as sophomore forward Joey Taiariol moved the puck to the point, where junior defenseman Blake Robertson's blast was tipped in for a goal by freshman forward Joey Watson. The goal was Watson's first as a varsity player.
South Lyon tied the game when senior defenseman Nick Burton found senior forward Alex Hudgens with a perfect pass between the circles for the equalizer. Junior forward C.J. Myers also assisted on the play.
Heritage carried most of the play in the stanza, outshooting South Lyon 16-6.
The scored remained deadlocked through the first half of the third period. With the faceoff deep in the Heritage zone, junior center man Corey Robertson won the draw clean with the puck sent to the left point with senior Cam Thomas low hard shot was deflected by Hudgens to regain the lead.
The score remained the same late into the third but the second South Lyon penalty of the game proved to be costly as Heritage forward Alex Schemppe won the battle of the loose puck in front of Zabinski to tie the game, with the Hawks second power play goal in as many chances.
South Lyon swarmed the Heritage goalie Cressey with the clock counting down, but Cressey was up to the challenge sending the game into a shootout led by the heroics of Warren and Zabinski.
Heritage outshot South Lyon 43-27 for the game.
