The South Lyon defense tallied all four goals to lead South Lyon Unified to a 4-1 win against the Novi Wildcats, Friday evening.

South Lyon goalie sophomore Justin Zabinski turned away 24 of 25 shots, while senior defenseman Cam Thomas scored two goals and added an assist for a three point effort.

The first period began with South Lyon carrying the play extensively in the Novi zone. With the faceoff to the right of senior Novi goalie Pat Carney, senior Mitch Paquette of South Lyon drew the puck cleanly to the left point, stationed by Thomas whose low hard shot found the back of the net. The goal came at the 15:49 mark.

The Wildcats of Novi, picked up the tempo the remaining part of the first to no avail as the period came to an end, with the Unified team leading 1 -0. 9-7 was the shots in the period with South Lyon leading the way.

Novi feeding off their gained momentum of the first stanza quickly tied the game in the second period converting on a failed clearing attempt, on a goal from senior forward Mark Baker, with helpers going to senior defenseman Connor Kenrick and senior forward Collin Pew.

Taking advantage of a power play opportunity, South Lyon took the lead as junior forward Corey Robertson looking to spread the ice passed the puck to the right point where Thomas quickly moved to senior defensemen Grant Widger who scored his first varsity goal and eventual game winner on a slap shot passed a screened Carney. South Lyon took a 2-1 lead heading into third, outshooting the Wildcats again by a 9-7 margin.

South Lyon made it a two goal game early in the last period as junior Blake Robertson took picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated down the left boards, his shot from a severe angle trickled past the Novi net mender. The final goal of the evening came with 3:52 remaining on the game clock, with the Wildcats were on the power play. Novi pulled their goalie during their power play opportunity hoping to pull within one goal with the two man advantage. Mitch Paquette from South Lyon intercepted a pass in his defensive zone and found Thomas heading to the neutral zone; Thomas took the pass and sent the puck from mid ice into the open cage.

Novi outshot South Lyon 11-9 in the final period.
