EDITOR'S NOTE: The MIPrepZone Weekly at the bottom of this story contains a video wrapup of the Maples' win over the Mustangs.
BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Seaholm volleyball coach Heather Lippert, who graduated from Walled Lake Central in 2001, had her senior season ended, like a good number of former Oakland County players, by Birmingham Marian.
Maples’ senior captain Erin Neuenfeldt has been on the varsity team for four years and has watched Marian dismantle her previous teams’ postseason dreams.
On Saturday, Seaholm found itself in a familiar spot, playing for a district title with Birmingham Marian standing in the way.
Fueled by passion and desire, Lippert, Neuenfeldt, and the rest of the Maples volleyball team defended their home court, capturing their first district crown since 2000 by taking down the Mustangs in a five-game thriller, 27-25, 25-17, 13-25, 17-25, 15-6.
“That was wild,” Lippert said after finally settling down from the postgame celebration. “I’m just so happy for these girls. There’s always been a rivalry between us and Marian, even more so than against Groves. These girls just worked so hard, and they didn’t want the season to end.”
The win propels Seaholm into the regional round, where it will face Troy, winner of the Troy Athens district, at Rochester High School next Tuesday.
“I’ve never been a part of something so spectacular,” Neuenfeldt said. “This is the best feeling that I’ve ever had. There was something different about today. We knew that we were going to win this one.”
The Maples jumped out ahead by taking the first two games and knocking Marian to the ground. The Mustangs, however, who have long been looked at as the county’s top dog, didn’t just tap out against Seaholm.
Instead, Marian stormed back to take the third and fourth, forcing a match-deciding fifth game.
Lippert credited her strong senior class for helping to carry the load throughout the season, and on Saturday in the fifth game, Neuenfeldt and fellow classmates Kathy Quigley, Lisa White, and Claire Meads did their part to send the Mustangs home packing.
“We switched some things up in the fifth,” Lippert said. “We were able to ride on Claire (Meads) serving, and we kept the ball in play and forced them to make all the mistakes.”
The Maples were led by Neuenfeldt, who tallied a game-high 19 kills. Quigley and White both chipped in with 11 kills.
“We were really getting it from everybody today,” Lippert said. “Quigley and White were huge for us, and our libero Andrea Gothard played great. And we’ve got sophomores out there setting the ball for us.”
Along with her team-leading kill total, Neuenfeldt also played a key role on defense for Seaholm, collecting 22 digs in the win.
“Erin has been unstoppable for us,” Lippert said of her senior leader. “Especially, in this last month.”
Things got rolling for Seaholm early on Saturday. The Maples endured an extremely close first game that saw them come away victorious, 27-25. The first-game win seemed to give Seaholm the confidence it needed.
“That first game was huge,” Lippert said. “Taking the first two games really gave us the cushion we needed. Today was great.”
There’s no doubt that Marian will be back again next year. The Mustangs, who uncharacteristically flaunted just one senior, bring back nearly the entire roster for 2013.
Lippert’s squad will have a short time to celebrate before getting back to the gym and preparing for Troy. The Colts, who swept their way to a district title at Troy Athens, are fully loaded with seniors that have high expectations.
“We’re ready,” Lippert said about advancing. “These girls want to get back into the gym and play. We all just love each other so much. It’s like a family, and we’re going to fight hard for each other.”
