ORCHARD LAKE — Regular season games aren’t often looked at in the same light as playoff games for obvious reasons, but if there was going to be one regular-season matchup to look forward to this year, it was probably Friday night’s bout that featured Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Detroit Cass Tech.
The rain-soaked game pinned the defending Division 1 state champion against the host Eaglets, winner of last year‘s Division 3 state title.
Played on St. Mary’s now-infamous red turf in front of a full house, the Eaglets came out and ran their way to a 13-6 victory over Cass Tech.
“The atmosphere was great tonight,” St. Mary’s head coach George Porritt said. “Our team really played tough out there. It was a great team effort, everyone did there jobs.”
With the win, St. Mary’s improves to 4-1 overall, while the previously-unbeaten Technicians fall to 4-1.
“They stayed with their game plan the whole night,” Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher said of St. Mary’s. “They were making plays on offense, and it allowed them to keep their plan rolling. We just have to do better at taking advantage of the chances we’re given.”
The Eaglets were carried by their two-headed rushing monster, tailbacks Grant Niemiec and Parker McInnis. The pair evaded tackles and kept the Cass Tech defense on its heels all night long.
“They won the battles up front, and that allowed for their backs to get to our second level,” Wilcher said. “We had the chance to make plays in the second level, but overall, our defensive line has to be better.”
Niemiec, St. Mary’s senior captain, rushed the ball 30 times for 126 yards, including the game-winning touchdown from four yards out in the third quarter.
“This was awesome,” Niemiec said of the game. “We came out and played as a team tonight. They had a lot of hype heading into this game, but we just out-toughed them. It was a team effort tonight. I’m going to say team about 100 times because that’s what it was all about.”
The Eaglets’ third-quarter touchdown gave them a 13-0 lead, but on the ensuing possession, Cass Tech’s Jourdan Lewis scored on a 12-yard pass from sophomore Jayru Campbell to close the gap to seven points.
Unfortunately for the Technicians, that would be all the points they’d score.
St. Mary’s defense was hungry, forcing three second-half turnovers that would help to secure the win for Porritt’s squad.
“Our defense was outstanding tonight,” he said. “All facets were working well. Our line, our linebackers, and our secondary were all great. It’s fun to watch these kids go out and play like that.”
Also scoring for the Eaglets was senior quarterback Matt Linehan, who scored on a 5-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter.
Unfortunately, the road for St. Mary‘s doesn’t get any easier in the coming weeks. The Eaglets will face Birmingham Brother Rice next week before upcoming games against Warren De La Salle and Novi Detroit Catholic Central.
“This is a great win for us,” Niemiec said. “We only have a short time to enjoy it, though. We’ve got to get right back to watching film because Rice is up next, and they’re a great team.”
