The holidays may mean rest and relaxation for some, but the show goes on for prep athletes, who must stay sharp during the break period.

“It’s definitely a different routine,” said Brother Rice wrestling coach Scott Moseley, whose squad competed at the Schuele Warrior Wars wrestling tournament Wednesday at Brother Rice. “You’re staying up a little bit later (and) you’re changing your eating habits. But one thing that continues to impress me about our athletes at Brother Rice is our commitment to the wrestling program. We’re continuing to improve.”

Indeed, the Warriors notched five victories, beating Troy Athens (50-23), Rochester’s B team (57-12), University of Detroit Jesuit (51-21), Pontiac (61-18) and Waterford Kettering’s B team (47-30) for a 5-0 record.

Andrew Napieraj (135), J.D. Plomin (140), Tom Girardot (152), Shon Powell (160), Josiah Thomas (189) and Christian Come (215) each posted 5-0 records to pace the Warriors.

“Coming off the Oakland County meet where we finished 10th, we had five of our athletes lose in the blood round,” Moseley said of those athletes, who failed to reach the medal rounds. “So a lot of them challenged themselves to step up their pace to continue to get better and this was the first step.”

The Warriors host Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Detroit Jesuit next Wednesday when the season resumes.
