GRAND BLANC - Despite riding the early momentum from plating a few first-inning runs, Royal Oak Shrine came up on the short end of a 4-3 final against Unionville-Sebewaing in Tuesday’s Division 4 baseball quarterfinal played at Grand Blanc.

Jack Salerno provided a two-run single in the opening frame and Tom Peaslee finished 2-for-4 with an RBI on offense while throwing six innings and yielding six hits and striking out five on the mound, but Unionville-Sebewaing was able to push across four runs and advance to meet Portland St. Patrick in a state semifinal contest at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Michigan State.

“We had the momentum going in our direction in the first inning, we had a good start, but couldn’t get it going from there,” Shrine head coach Dan Noble said. “I’m just going to remember the way we came together.”

The Knights (27-12) went on a hot streak late in the season and then secured a district title before earning the program’s first regional championship in 14 years last weekend.

They received big contributions from nine seniors who won a lot of games for the program, but will turn to some game-tested juniors and sophomores to help lead the charge next season.

“They exemplify everything we want our program to be about and they’ve done it on the field,” Noble said of his seniors. “We started gelling at the end of the year and guys settled into their roles.”
