With a bullseye squarely on its back, the Clarkston Everest Collegiate golf team pushed all distractions aside and went on about its business, capturing a second straight Division 4 state golf championship Saturday at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East golf course.

Mitch Lowney led the way, firing a two-day total of 143 (1-under), trailing just medalist Austin Fauser of Clinton (139, 5-under). His consistent play helped the Mountaineers pull away from Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian, which shared the lead with Everest Collegiate after Day 1.

“The way the season started (losing their first match), we had a talk,” Everest Collegiate coach Dave Smith said. “After the match, we talked about taking steps. We talked about winning the Catholic League. Then moving on to regionals. I think it worked out well for us.”

The team captain, Joey McMahon, shot 152 and was tied for eighth overall. J.C. James (163) and Nick Korns (171) also scored for Collegiate, which bettered its winning score from last year by eight shots. McMahon, Lowney, Korns and James were on last year’s squad as well. This year they were joined by Kevin Meehan.

NorthPointe Christian was new to the division this year, having finished fourth in Division 3 a year ago. Smith said he felt the added challenge helped his team this weekend.

“The kids love competing,” said the coach. “Mitch and Joey held their own today against some of the big dogs and the rest of the kids did what they needed to do to get us the win.”

West Bloomfield Frankel Jewish Academy finished eighth overall with a two-day total of 682. Jacob Martin (161), Jason Ernst (168), Jordan Salesin (179) and Tyler Presser (182) scored for the Jaguars.
