Was there ever a doubt?

The Novi Detroit Catholic Central boys golf team lived up to all the hype, rolling past the field in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon to win its third straight Division 1 state championship at Michigan State University.

Not only did the team sport the individual medalist – Sean Niles – it had three of the top five golfers at the two-day event. The Shamrocks shot a 294 on Saturday and their 581 two-day total was 16 shots better than runner-up Grosse Pointe South (597).

“It’s kind of a culmination of everything we’ve built this season,” Catholic Central coach Mike Anderson said. “We had one single goal in mind when the season started, to win another state championship with a veteran, senior lineup. It was nice to see them achieve what they set out to achieve and go out and do it.”

And do it they did. Niles shared the lead after Friday’s opening round but fired a 3-under 69 on Saturday to pull away and earn medalist honors. The senior, who will be playing his college golf at Oakland University, entered the tournament on a roll, having won a regional title last week.

“We’ve had a lot of great players at CC, but he’s the first medalist we’ve ever had,” Anderson said. “It says a lot about him. The entire team has had a great year for us.”

Fellow seniors James Piot finished fourth overall after firing a two-day total of 146. Smith was one spot back with his 148. Senior Dyllan Skinner rounded out the team score with a 152. Senior Sean Sooch finished with a 154.

Clarkston senior Brady Dice finished seventh overall with a 149, helping his Wolves to a fourth place team finish. They shot a two-day total of 619. Patrick Deardorff (152), Noah Sampson (155) and Noah Bridgeman (164) also scored for the Wolves.

Seaholm, led by Henry Scavone’s 150 – good for eighth overall – finished sixth overall. Parker Pickell (156), Alex Acho (164) and Matt Jackson (167) also scored for the Maples.

Rochester Adams – led by Michael Costabile’s 160 – and Stoney Creek – led by Ian Catallo and Rob Mooney’s 171s – finished 15th and 18th, respectively.

With the win, Catholic Central became the first team since Midland (1948-50) to win three straight Division 1 or Class A team championships. Piot and Smith have been starters on all three title-winning teams. Sooch and Niles joined them as starters last year.

When all five players were in the lineup, Catholic Central was unbeaten this season. And one of the five was the medalist in all of those tournaments.

“This is a special group of young men,” Anderson said. “At any given time, each of them could be the best player in the state. To have that all together at the same time, is very unique to say the least. I’m incredibly proud. I’m so happy that they get to go out the way they did. It says a lot about our program. Today was especially rewarding for the boys. They’ve worked so hard for this.”
