EAST LANSING — With technology allowing golf fans to live track results at the MHSAA state finals, those paying attention saw two-time defending state champion Novi Detroit Catholic Central struggling a bit – at least early on.

With hefty expectations of the golfing world on their shoulders, the Shamrocks got off to an unusually slow start Friday on the West Course at Forest Akers.

“I would say that we got off to the worst start we’ve gotten off to all year,” Catholic Central coach Mike Anderson said after seeing his team sit at 9-over at one point during its first nine holes played. “They came in and were a little tight. When they settled down and regained their composure, they really started to hit the ball well.”

That might be coach Anderson’s understatement of the year. Catholic Central found its groove and shot 9-under on its back nine to finish at 1-under (287) after the first day of competition. The Shamrocks will take an 11-shot lead over second place Grosse Pointe South (298) into Day 2.

Senior Sean Niles shot a 2-under 70 to lead Catholic Central. He currently sits atop the leaderboard along with Plymouth’s Justin Kapke. Three of his fellow teammates also sit among the Top 10. Senior Ben Smith is a shot back (71), senior James Piot is two shots back (72) and senior Sean Sooch fired a 2-over 74.

Birmingham Seaholm junior Henry Scavone was at one point 4-under par. He finished one shot off the lead with his round of 71. Birmingham Brother Rice junior Brendan O’Rourke is tied for 12th overall at 75, tied with Clarkston seniors Noah Sampson and Brady Dice.

The Wolves are tied for fourth – with Rockford – after shooting a 19-over 307. Plymouth is third at 304. Seaholm (314) is sixth, followed by Grand Blanc (318), Hartland (323), Ann Arbor Pioneer (323) and Midland (324) in the Top 10. Rochester Adams is 15th and Stoney Creek 18th after Day 1. Michael Costabile (82) led the Highlanders while Rob Mooney (80) was low man for the Cougars.

“We feel good and confident,” Anderson said of his team heading into the second day of competition. “These boys have worked hard all year long and they deserve to be in the position they are in.”

Division 2 at Grand Valley State University

Defending state champion St. Johns has a 14-shot lead over East Lansing after shooting a 298 Friday afternoon at The Meadows. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood fired at 313 and sits tied for third with Grosse Ile. Defending individual champion Devin Deogun led the Cranes with his 70, one shot off the lead.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s is in sixth place with its 321 team score. Chris Williams led the Eaglets with a 73. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (led by Jackson Stowe – 79) is 11th and South Lyon East (led by Arthur Clark – 81) currently sits 17th after the first day of competition.

Division 3 at Ferris State University

Jackson Lumen Christi leads Tawas Area by a single stroke after Day 1 at Katke Golf Course.

Division 4 at Michigan State University

Defending state champion Clarkston Everest Collegiate fired a 319 Friday on Forest Akers East, tied with Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian for first place. Frankel Jewish Academy shot 344, good for eighth place.

Mitch Lowney led Everest with a round of 72, just three shots back of the leader, Austin Fauser of Clinton. Joey McMahan shot a 76 for the Mountaineers and sits alone in eighth place. J.C. James (85) and Nick Korns (86) and Kevin Meehan (86) rounded out the scores for Everest.

Jason Ernst shot an 80 to lead the way for FJA.
