History tells us that the Birmingham Brother Rice boys lacrosse team will someday not win the state championship.

No team or program has won every title in their respective sport. However, Brother Rice is a perfect 12-for-12 when it comes to MHSAA Division 1 state championships in boys lacrosse.

Someday the Warriors will come up short of the title. The question is, will it be on Saturday when they face Novi Detroit Catholic Central for the 2017 D1 championship at 2 p.m.?

The Warriors and Shamrocks are meeting for the title for the fourth consecutive season, this time from Parker Middle School in Howell.

“I think this is a very good team and a team capable of winning,” Catholic Central coach Dave Wilson said. “All of our teams have been a little different. With personnel changes and different personalities, each team has been different. I know some of our players feel (that they will end Rice’s streak). We have goals as a program and winning a state title is one of those goals. We know we have to beat Rice on Saturday to do that.”

These two have met twice this season, with Rice getting the nod both times. The first meeting came on April 25 with the Warriors picking up a 15-14 win in overtime. The second meeting with the Catholic League championship, where Rice won 15-10.

“We both have gotten a lot of looks at each other and are familiar with each other’s teams,” Brother Rice coach Ajay Chawla said. “It is always difficult to beat a team three times. CC is a very talented program that is well-coached. It’s going to be a grind and a great challenge, especially when you add the rivalry into the mix.”

Scoring has been an issue for the Shamrocks (15-5) in the past against the Warriors (19-4). In the three previous state finals meetings, CC was outscored 49-22.

“We’ve been able to score (against Rice this season). We had 14 in the first meeting and 10 in the second. That’s very positive for us,” Wilson said. “What we need to change is (Brother Rice’s) opportunities and limiting their possessions. While we have scored 24 in two games, they have scored 30. We need to change that.”

Chawla acknowledged the Shamrocks’ improved offensive numbers. Senior midfielder Brennan Kamish and junior attack Peter Thompson were both named US Lacrosse All Americans this week and senior midfielder Nick Capatina has also been a consistent scoring threat for CC this season.

“I think (CC) has quite a bit of talent over there. Offensively, they have some really great players,” Chawla said of the Shamrocks. “They have three players that we really have to focus in on and if we can stop them, our chances of winning are pretty high. We will key-in defensively on those guys and try to make them beat us with some other guys.”

Rice is certainly not lacking in talent. The 2017 squad had seven players named to the US Lacrosse All America squad. That includes midfielders Jack Kelly and Daniel Reaume as well as attackers Erik Schmidt and Nick Dudley.

When it comes to defense, Rice seems to have the edge. The Warriors have All Americans in Carson Cochran and Nick Andoni on the defensive side of the field. Both teams have an All American in net in Teddy Lievois (Rice) and Hunter Braun (CC).

One of the key battles could come at the X, where both teams have young players battling for the faceoffs. Previous title games featured an All-American battle of Evan Dennis vs. Alex Jarzembowski. This year’s game will be much different. Rice has given the responsibility over to freshman Manny Betrus, while Catholic Central has been splitting the role between freshman Connor Baratta and sophomore Connor Beals.

“In lacrosse, having the ball is obviously very important. We feel like Manny has been getting better throughout the season and we have a lot of confidence in him,” Chawla said. “That’s an important aspect of this game and I know (CC) has always had a talented player on the other side.”

The Shamrocks have managed to get closer to beating Rice in each of the last three championship games, losing by just two last year. Should the Shamrocks win, the story will likely be more about ending Rice’s reign atop the state of Michigan as opposed to winning their first championship. Either way, Wilson will be happy to celebrate.

“We just want to win,” Wilson said with a laugh. “A win is a win and we want to raise a banner. To be the best, you have to beat the best. I think to win a title, we would want to beat Rice. But, no matter who we would be playing, winning a state championship would be the focus.”

Chawla’s players are accustomed to the pressure of not losing in these situations and the Warriors are certainly not going to let their streak end without a fight.

“We feel like we will be ready when 2 p.m. hits,” Chawla said. “We know what this game means and what is at stake. It’s not going to be easy, but I think our guys are going to be ready.”
