Detroit Catholic Central faces a familiar foe, Birmingham Brother Rice, in state final

TROY – Something had to give in Wednesday's Division 1 boys lacrosse semifinal between unbeaten Hartland and Novi Detroit Catholic Central, a state finalist in each of the last three seasons.

It was only fitting that the game ended in overtime, as Detroit Catholic Central earned a 12-11 win and clinched a fourth-straight D1 state final matchup against Birmingham Brother Rice. The game-winning goal came with 2:26 left in overtime on senior co-captain Brennan Kamish's unassisted wrap-around tally to provide the final score of the game played at Troy Athens.

“The initial plan was for me to dodge from the top of the field down but that didn’t work out so I wrapped around,” Kamish said. “But I trust my teammates to do their jobs of cutting through and if I had missed that shot I know I would have had someone on the back side.”

Detroit Catholic Central moves to 15-5 win the win, while Hartland finishes the season 21-1.

The Eagles head coach Garnet Potter III was proud of his team and its efforts on the field.

“It was a great game. We played great, we played hard and we gave effort. It’s not always going to end up the way you want it to,” he said. “It’s disappointing. It’s a public school/private school thing and we couldn’t get the public school in the finals this year.”

The Eagles took an early 4-0 lead – scoring the first two goals just eight seconds apart at 8:43 and 8:35. Jake Gallaher scored first (assist from Garnet Potter) and Jake DeYoung scored the second. Four minutes later Carter Eiden scored followed by Gallaher found the net less than a minute later (assist by Potter.)

Catholic Central scored late in the quarter, putting in back to back goals at 2:03 and with :56 left in the first as Ryan Sullivan (assist Joey Kamish) and Ethan Pattison (assist Peter Thompson) each scored.

The Eagles went on to take a 5-4 halftime lead. The third quarter featured six total goals, four of which belonged to Catholic Central, and the Shamrocks went on top 8-7 to start the final frame.

The Shamrocks were up by two with 1:40 left in regulation, as the Eagles received a pair of goals by Andrew Spisz that were assisted by Garnet Potter to force the extra session.

In the overtime period, the Eagles won the face off and had opportunities to end the game but couldn’t capitalize.

“We put one over the net and hit the post on another. We had all the opportunities in the world,” Coach Potter said.

Shamrocks’ head coach Dave Wilson knew his team was prone to start slowly.

“We didn’t have the ball for long stretches at times but when we got the ball we kind of kicked the door in a little bit and got it going. 4-2 is a lot better than 4 to nothing,” Coach Wilson said.

The Shamrocks worked to slow down the high-scoring Eagles' offense that averaged 15 to 16 goals a game, according to Wilson.

As for Catholic Central's next opponent, it's a familiar one as the Shamrocks have lost the last three state finals by scores of 10-8 (in 2016), 16-7 (in 2015) and 23-7 (in 2014) to league rival Brother Rice.

“They are too familiar. Just another Catholic League game,” Coach Wilson said.
