MILFORD - South Lyon's Lily Mueller couldn't believe it. "Omigod!" she exclaimed after clearing 5-3 in the high jump, to set a freshman school record and qualify for the state track and field finals.

But Novi's Hannah Hood-Blaxill topped that with a 5-5 effort to win the high jump in a delightful duel between the pair. "I was not expecting that at all," smiled Hood-Blaxill. "My PR was 5-3 and I only cleared it once before this. I stopped caring about the competition (and) focused on myself for once."

The top two finishers in each event, plus those who meet qualifying standards, will compete at the June 3 state finals.

Novi won the boys title with 107 points with Fenton (86) and Walled Lake Central (69) following, and Northville won the girls crown with 135 points, finishing ahead of runnerup Lakeland (112) and Novi and Fenton, who tied for third with 61.

Lakeland's Grace Stark won the 100 (12.18) and 100 hurdles (13.99), and led teammate Marisa Sailus (25.55) in a 1-2 sweep of the 200, clocking 24.99.

But Northville's Olivia Harp, Ana Barrott and Cayla Eckenroth swept the first three places in the 3,200, Clare McNamara won the 400 and joined Yasmine Affes, Erin McCallum and Savannah Manley on the winning 4 x 200 relay.

Milford's Mallory Barrett and Victoria Heiligenthal took the first two places in the 800 after Heiligenthal won the 1,600.

Walled Lake Central's Taky Ezell was a double winner, taking the shot put and discus throws.

Novi started the running events with a victory in the 4 x 800 relay with Aric Landy, John Landy, Nate Wood and Scott MacPherson comprising the winning group that clocked 7:59.2.

Walled Lake Northern's Joe Albright won the pole vault, and Walled Lake Central's Mike Woolridge, who won the long jump with a leap of more than 22-1.

Albright cleared 13-6 and missed at an attempt at 14-feet. "The backwind was here and this runway is really fast," Albright said, "(and) I've been focusing on a bigger stick."

Teammate Paul Forhan won the shot put for the Knights. Lakeland's David Vella won the high jump (6-1) and Walled Lake Western's Jack Dodge won the 110 hurdles and 200 dash.

Milford's Isaac Phillips won the 300 hurdles and teamed with Gunnar Gustafson, Carson Jensen and Josh Deradorian on the winning 4 x 400 relay (3:23.98).
