LAKE ORION – With a league championship awaiting them in a win, the Lake Orion baseball team didn’t want to wait any longer than it had to in order to earn the victory.

The Dragons took care of Stoney Creek in five innings on Wednesday with a 10-0 victory to earn a share of the OAA Red championship.

“We have two goals. That is to win the league championship and to win our last game of the year,” Lake Orion coach Andy Schramek said. “We aren’t doing it every year, but it sure feels good to get a league championship this year. This is such a great league and very competitive. Every team in this league plays the right way and is well coached.”

The Dragons (21-11, 12-3) will share the championship with Rochester (20-8, 12-3), as the Falcons picked up a 2-1 win over Rochester Adams on Wednesday to create a co-championship.

Lake Orion jumped out quickly on the Cougars (6-19, 2-13), using the long ball to establish the lead. Andre Orselli had his fourth home run of the week in the first inning to put Lake Orion up 2-0 and Travis VandenHeuvel made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the third.

“We hadn’t hit very well with runners in scoring position until this week. It started on Monday and hasn’t stopped,” Schramek said. “I am really proud of the way we have been swinging the bats. We’ve always been able to get runners on base, but we haven’t been getting them home. That has changed a lot this week and it’s good to see.”

With an early lead, senior Ryan Kolp settled in on the mound. Backed by some strong defensive plays, Kolp kept the Cougars off the scoreboard, forcing them to strand eight runners in the contest.

“It was great to have my coaches and teammates trust in me to get the job done,” Kolp said of taking the mound for the league-clincher. “I am confident in myself and definitely confident in my defense behind me. It was great to be able to deliver for them (Wednesday).”

The game really broke open in the fourth, as the Dragons put up five runs to go up 10-0. VandenHeuvel had a two-run single to start the scoring and Casey Stironek would add a RBI single in the inning.

Kolp took the mound in the top of the fifth knowing he was three outs from securing a league title.

“We were ready to celebrate then,” Kolp said of the fifth. “I was a little more nervous taking the mound that inning, but I knew I just had to make my pitches. It was a great feeling to see that last out.”

The Cougars put a runner on second, but Kolp again battled through and earned his three outs to complete the contest.

“He’s our senior,” Schramek said of Kolp. “Things were in his hands (Wednesday) and he has had two straight shutouts in league play. That’s huge for us.”

The Dragons will return to action on Friday when they face Saline for a pair of games. They still have meetings with Henry Ford II, Eisenhower and Brandon prior to district play at the end of the month.

“I think we are going to be a pretty tough team to beat moving forward,” Schramek said. “We are hitting, pitching and fielding pretty well. If we continue to hit the ball at key times, we can be a really good team.”
