Highlanders clinch first conference title since '08-'09

WHITE LAKE >> Rarely will you see a coach less impressed with a first-inning rally that leaves their team ahead by four before a championship game is more than a half-hour old.

Howell coach Ron Pezzoni barely blinked when his No. 8-ranked Highlanders took a 4-0 lead on No. 3 Lakeland in the first inning of Monday’s KLAA Lakes Conference championship game, knowing it wasn’t going to last.

Twenty-two runs, 19 hits — including a pair of Chase Schultz home runs — 10 errors and three lead changes later, the Highlanders pulled out a 13-11 win to clinch their first Lakes Conference title since 2008-09, the first year of existence for the Kensington Lakes Activities Association.

“It didn’t matter. For some reason, even with the fact that we’ve got two pretty good pitchers pitching, these games are just stinkin’ dogfights. It’s hard to get people out. The hitters are just locked in,” Pezzoni said of the slugfest, which strongly resembled the regular-season meeting between the two, which Lakeland won by two runs.

“They’re fun I guess — they’re not fun for me to coach. They’re fun when it’s over.”

It wasn’t over until the Highlanders (25-1) scored three times in the top of the seventh, on a pair of bases-loaded errors by Lakeland (23-5), putting Howell ahead for good. Even so, the Eagles brougtht the potential tying run to the plate in the form of catcher Rianna Koteles, who is more than capable of tying it with one swing. She was out on a wicked liner to right field to end the game.

Lakeland made seven errors in the game, in part because they had to scramble after shortstop Elizabeth Langley had to depart the game, injuring her knee in a third-inning rundown.

Regardless, that many extra outs is not what you want in a game of that importance.

“Oh, (heck) no,” Lakeland coach Joe Alsup agreed. “Well, we got in trouble, because our shortstop got injured, and when that happened, we had to move everybody out of position. … We had everybody everywhere.”

After Howell struck first — getting four runs on two hits in the top of the first inning — Lakeland responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring six times to take a 6-4 lead.

Kaley Miller’s bases-clearing double was the big blow in the inning, but Lauren Castellon and Koteles both had RBI doubles in the frame, while Teresa Menzel drove in one with a single.

Both teams scored once in the third by way of a delayed steal, then Howell got one in the fourth on a Maddie Gillett double to make it a one-run game, 7-6, before taking a 10-7 lead with a four-run fifth. Gillett had a two-run double and Emma Johnson an RBI single, but only after Veronica Pezzoni kept the inning alive with a blooper that dropped in behind first base, and plated another run.

That’s when momentum began to swing back to the Eagles.

Schultz led off the seventh with a solo homer then, after a walk to Castellon, Mary Zimmerman brought in two runs with a high school version of the old Little League home run: Her sacrifice bunt attempt was fielded, but the throw went into the right-field corner, allowing both runners to scoot around and score, tying the game at 10-10.

Schultz added a go-ahead homer with one out in the sixth inning, putting the Eagles back on top, 11-10.

In between, one of those moved-around fielders, Kaley Miller — normally the second baseman, filling in for Langley at short — made one of those potentially game-swinging plays, diving to catch a line shot off the bat of Emma Johnson to strand the bases loaded. It was the only time in the game the Eagles retired Johnson, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

“We came back, and I thought we were going to hang in there, but you know …” Alsup said.

Even after his team had let a three-run lead slip away, Pezzoni wasn’t any more impacted than he had been when his team jumped ahead early.

“Just knowing how these games have been — it’s funny you should say that, because I really didn’t feel like it was the end of the world, and normally, I would. Normally, our game is to pitch well and play good defense. We swing the bats good, but these are just offensive battles,” the coach said. “The last game we played at our place, I thought we’d have an advantage, because we were the last team batting, and the same thing here, but it’s so unpredictable with Lakeland, it’s like the opposite happens all the time.”

Howell advances to the Association Championship game on Wednesday, where it will face the winner of Monday’s Kensington Conference championship game between Northville and Canton.
