Both teams share moment of silence for '84 graduate Bill Nelson

NOVI - The feeling that Birmingham Brother Rice likely had in defeating Novi Detroit Catholic Central surely was bittersweet. The Warriors took the CHSL title game 15-10, but both teams shared a moment of silence for 1984 Brother Rice graduate Bill Nelson.

His son Billy took the field with his team and came out with the victory.

After the contest, Brother Rice head coach Ajay Chawla talked about when the decision was made for Nelson to play in today’s contest. “I went over to the house this afternoon to sit down with him, we talked about what his dad would want. Billy talked about it and said that is what my dad would want me to do and I said, you make the decision and we both made it together. He showed up today and it was real special to get him out there and he played well when he was out there.”

At the start of the game though it looked as though the Shamrocks had a chance to bring the Brother Rice run of dominance to an end as they got on the board just thirty-five seconds into the game.

Things went back and forth throughout the majority of the first half with neither team gaining more than a goal advantage until Rice picked up three goals in a minute to make it 7-4 with four minutes left in the half.

Catholic Central had an excellent scoring opportunity late in the second quarter that would have closed the gap to two goals but turned the ball over and Brother Rice converted with only three seconds left in the half sending the game to intermission with the Warriors up 8-4.

Defensively Brother Rice managed to keep the Catholic Central shooters at bay most of the evening. “We tried to shut it down a little,” Chawla commented after the game. We watched a lot of film from the last game and saw a lot of tendencies that we tried to take advantage of defensively.”

In the second half, Catholic Central managed to close the gap to two goals on a couple of occasions but each time, Brother Rice stormed back.

Leading the way for the Warriors on the night was Jack Kelly who had seven goals on the night while Daniel Reaume and Nick Dudley both scored three goals.

“Kelly is unbelievable, he comes to play every day,” Chawla stated afterwards. “He isn’t the biggest guy on the field but he is the darn toughest and he has a motor that is unrivaled.”

Peter Thompson who led the way with four goals and an assist for the Shamrocks.

“It was a very emotional day for all of us, the coaches alike,” Chwala said. “This was a real resilient win, it shows the heart and the resilience of these young guys. They played for Billy today. He was awesome and they were awesome too.”

Five of Nelson's brothers graduated and two of his sons including current Warrior lacrosse member Billy have attended Brother Rice.
