COMMERCE TWP. >> If you’re not careful, Mother Nature can swipe your last chance from Father Time.

When the rains came, delaying the first game between Lakeland and Walled Lake Northern in the sixth inning, the host Knights knew they still had plenty of time to rally from a 3-1 deficit.

Then, all of a sudden, they didn’t.

After waiting out nearly an hour’s worth of lightning and thunder delays, and with no break apparent on the radar, the game — already an official contest, since it was past the fifth inning — was called complete, as a 3-1 Lakeland win.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader will be made up at a later date.

“They’re going to be one of the top teams in our league, so beating them is a real plus. That really gives us a head start in the league. Everybody has a loss in our division now, except for us,” Lakeland coach Joe Alsup said. “I’m real pleased with the way we played.”

Not everyone left the field as upbeat.

By the letter of the rule, everything was handled correctly, but not necessarily the way you want to have a rivalry game decided.

“No, but what can you do?” said Northern coach Kristen Woodard, frustrated with the decision of the umpires. “We’re at the top of our lineup, too, and could’ve made something happen in the last couple of innings.

“But we didn’t help ourselves, either, with errors.”

For sure, the Knights (4-1, 3-1 KLAA) did not help themselves, committing five errors in the game, including one with two outs in the top of the fifth that left the door cracked for the Eagles (5-0, 5-0) to break a 1-1 tie.

That fifth-inning rally stands as the difference in the game.

After Mary Zimmerman led of with a slap single through the drawn-in infield, and Elizabeth Langley followed with a walk, the Knights cut down the lead runner at third base in two straight at-bats, before the infield error cost them.

Rianna Koteles’ grounder was thrown away, scoring both runners on base.

In the bottom of the inning, Northern couldn’t convert a leadoff double by Ashley Komosinski into a run, but started a rally in the top of the sixth with a walk by Hannah Bunker before the umpiring crew sent everyone off the field. That left all-stater Courtney Callahan at the plate when — or if — play resumed.

It did not.

“Teresa (Menzel) was outstanding for us today, kept her composure, even when it was raining there at the end,” Lakeland coach Joe Alsup said of his senior pitcher. “We’ve got some great kids, seven seniors in the group. They don’t make many mistakes for us. …

“We haven’t been getting much respect this year. Most people don’t mention us at all, in the (lists) of good teams that are around, but I think we’re as good as any team in the state right now, and I think we’ll show that as the year progresses, with our team. We can play ball. To beat us, you’re going to have to play a solid game, and our kids will play a solid game, themselves.”

The lone Northern run was the result of the one time the Eagles did have a miscue, as Callahan reached on an error in the fourth, stole second, and scored on a single by Sam Harris.

That tied the game at 1-1, after Lakeland scored in the top of the inning. Lauren Castellon doubled and scored on a single by Madeline Langdon that dropped into the outfield, just in front of the Knights’ right fielder.
