Mustangs christen brand new track surface with first dual meet

NORTHVILLE - Two familiar track and field foes were at it again Tuesday at Northville, but under slightly different circumstances. While Novi and Northville have battled in the past on the Mustangs' deteriorating track surface, this time the two teams christened the spanking new, artificial surface track with a KLAA Central dual meet.

The track was installed this past summer according to Northville coach Tim Dalton and the Mustangs wanted to break it in the right way.

While the Mustang girls had their way with Novi, winning 75-31, the boys fell short against the Wildcats, whose distance prowess was apparent in a 70-41 triumph.

Gabe Mulder won the 1,600 in 4:27.38, John Landy led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 800, finishing in 2:05, and joined Aric Landy, Nate Wood and Scott McPherson on the winning 4 x 800 relay (8:41) for the Wildcats. "We currently have the fastest time (4x800 relay time) on this track," cracked Aric Landy. "I'm thrilled."

Aric Landy won the 3,200 (10:09.78) with Trey Mullins (10:12) and Northville's Peter Bejin (10:15) in a tight race broken up on the final lap.

Novi coach Marsha Reid was as pleased as can be expected, especially since both teams were coming off spring break and some rust was apparent.

"It was good, there are some thing we need to work on ... the relay exchanges (but) we swept the pole vault."

The Wildcats won the 4 x 100 relay with Leon Chen, John Stefan, Sean Pitcher and 100-dash winner Nathan Hankerson (11.56), who dropped the baton in the 4 x 200 relay, comprising the unit which clocked 45.04.

"I was trying to switch hands and the baton slipped," confessed Hankerson. "(But) I'm pleased with what I did in the 100, helping out the team."

Stefan surprised himself by winning the 110 high hurdles. "It was a struggle, I hadn't jumped a hurdle in two weeks," he said.

Scott Sawyer won the pole vault with a leap of 13-feet, but dropped out of the high jump after tweaking his calf muscle, according to Reid, as Northville's 6-foot-8 jumper Alec Hopkins won with a leap of 6-2.

Mudel pushed the pace in the 1,600, leading from start to finish. "I'm not much of a kicker," said Mudel of his strategy. "I've had some injury issues (so) my main goal is to stay healthy."

Northville's girls took a big hit from graduations, including state sprint champ Chloe Abbott, utility sprinter Lindsay Walters and distance ace Lexa Barrott, among others, according to Dalton.

Even so, the Mustangs powered through the distance races with Ana Barrott, Cayla Eckenroth, Olivia Harp and Emily Assemany, who comprised the winning 4 x 800 relay, picking up points in the 1,600 and 3,200 races.

Yasmine Affes and Savannah Manley were 1-2 in the 200, and Abby Dunn was second in the 300 hurdles behind Novi's Taylor Stone.

"The girls were able to come out on top and the boys, we were in it until the 200," said Northville coach Tim Dalton. "We lost a lot from a decent amount of seniors, but it's a new year (and) that's high school sports."

Novi's Emma Hammelef won the pole vault (10-0), discus throw (114-2) and shot put (37-9) in a noteworthy display of field event prowess.

Northville freshman Clare McNamara won the long jump (16-6 3/4).
