AUBURN HILLS – Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes girls basketball team isn’t the biggest, but that didn’t stop the Lakers from battling in the land of the giants on Wednesday night.

WOLL faced Novi Franklin Road Christian in the Class D district semifinal from Auburn Hills Oakland Christian, and despite being outsized by the Warriors trio of 6-foot athletes, the Lakers didn’t shy away from their aggressive style and picked up a 60-50 win.

“We haven’t faced a team with that kind of size all year and we may not again,” WOLL coach Steve Robak said of the Warriors. “I was proud of the girls for not being intimidated by that and continuing to attack the basket and battle for rebounds. We didn’t always score, but we drew fouls and we forced turnovers. The girls really battled.”

The charity stripe played a key in the game, as the Lakers attempted 30 free throws to just 13 for Franklin Road Christian. WOLL’s continued aggression on offense forced the Warriors into foul trouble the whole game. WOLL began the second and fourth quarters in the bonus.

“We were certainly at the line an awful lot,” Robak said. “The free-throw line ended up being very important in the game and I credit the girls for stepping up and hitting those shots.”

The Lakers (16-5) established a 13-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Warriors (16-5) were quick to respond, scoring the first seven points of the second period to tie the game at 13-13.

WOLL answered from there, going on a 9-0 run to take a lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. Franklin Road Christian would hang around the rest of the way, but couldn’t cut the WOLL lead to any less than four points.

“Our girls won the battle in a lot of ways (Wednesday). Franklin Road Christian is a good team that had a lot of size on us, but our girls continued to attack and competed for 32 minutes,” Robak said. “We were aggressive and that got (Franklin Road Christian) into a lot of foul trouble.”

Kayla Sanders had 19 points to lead the Lakers in the win while Isabelle Kline added 14 points. Tiffany Senerius chipped in nine.

Danielle Fusco led Franklin Road Christian with 13 points while Chanelle Lochrie and Rachel Bause each had 12 points.

Waterford Our Lady will now face its rival, Clarkston Everest Collegiate, in Friday’s district final at 7 p.m. The Lakers own two wins over CEC this season.

“They know what we are going to do and we have an understanding of what they are going to do,” Robak said of playing Clarkston Everest Collegiate. “There’s not going to be a lot of surprises, so we just need to bring the same energy we brought to the floor (Wednesday).”
