BLOOMFIELD HILLS - It's been awhile since Rochester United has been on the outside looking in.

After Thursday night's game against Lake Orion, the United squad now finds itself in exactly that position. And it doesn't look good moving forward.

The host Dragons once again took it to RU, picking up a 3-1 victory and all but locking up the OAA Red championship in the process. At 9-1-1 in league play, Lake Orion needs a win over Farmington Hills Unified next Thursday to secure the title and break Rochester United's four-year string of league championships.

"We knew going in that it was a must-win for us if we wanted to win the Red (division), so we put an emphasis on tonight to play a good game," Lake Orion head coach Nick Field said. "As the game progressed, I thought we got better and fortunately it resulted in a win."

Though outplayed for much of the first period, Lake Orion needed just seven seconds of the second period to break a scoreless tie. A misplayed puck by RU led to a breakaway goal by junior Jacob Helzer to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

Rochester United did tie it up just over six minutes into the third on a goal by Griffin Harper (from Matt Hawke and Michael Rittner), but that didn't last long.

Lake Orion's Gabe Potyk scored his 13th goal of the season - this one on the power play - to again give his team the lead with 8:18 left to play. An empty-net goal by T.J. Hirschfield - his 14th - with 10 seconds remaining sent the large home crowd into a frenzy.

"Obviously it's always better when you are playing ahead, so we knew that first goal was going to be huge," RU head coach Jason Kowalski said. "I thought we used our speed really well. With the bigger (ice) surface, there was time and space and we utilized that in the first period. It was a really good, hard-fought game. They scored first and it took us awhile to get our feet back under us. I think they responded well and finished the second period well."

Both goalies played well. Jack Barker stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced for Lake Orion (15-5-2), which has handed RU (15-8 overall, 8-2 OAA Red) its only two league losses.

Kowalski said winning a fifth straight OAA Red title was his team's first goal. But now that it's more than likely over, the team will now look forward.

"State playoffs, it's two weeks away, and odds are we're probably going to see Lake Orion again," said Kowalski, whose team will await the winner of the Lake Orion-Utica Eisenhower pre-regional semifinal. "(Lake Orion) has a hard game against Eisenhower, and we'll be waiting for the winner. We're just going to go back to practice next week and work on the little things to make us successful."

Lake Orion has now won four straight games and will take on Division 3 No. 1 ranked Flint Powers Saturday on the road before returning to the Detroit Skating Club to face the Flyers.
