NOVI >> Longtime Birmingam Marian coach Mary Cicerone looked slightly confused, as she wandered around the court in the aftermath of Wednesday’s Catholic League A-B semifinals at Novi Detroit Catholic Central.

“Whose team was that?” she asked rhetorically, with a lopsided grin.

The team wearing the “Marian” jerseys had systematically dismantled Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard in the night’s second semifinal, the Mustangs rolling to a 65-32 win, allowing them to return to the Catholic League finals to defend their two straight league titles.

Except it won’t be in the normal venue.

“I keep saying we’re going to Calihan, and they all keep correcting me. I keep saying ‘But it’s always *BEEN* at Calihan,’” Cicerone said of the finals, which have historically been at Calihan Hall on the campus of University of Detroit Mercy. “It’s not going to seem right.”

Instead, the Mustangs (14-4) will take on Central Division champion Farmington Hills Mercy (16-2) at 3 p.m. Sunday, at Wayne State University.

If Marian plays like it did on Wednesday, they’ll have a very good chance of making it a three-peat, especially since the season series with the Marlins — losses by one and three points — was not really as lopsided as a sweep might indicate.

“I had high expectations for this group. But but I really only have one that puts that much time into basketball. … Just Olivia (Moore),” Cicerone said of her team, which she jokingly put “too many soccer players” as a weakness coming into the season. “I thought with my soccer players … one’s with us, one’s not. But this is what I expected from them. They should be able to do this every night.”

A simple tweak to the offense opened lots of things up, not only for the two back-court mates involved, but for everyone.

“I switched Maria (Kaschalk) on the point, so Livy (Moore) didn’t get so tired, and we’re trying to get her some more looks, but what we got was more looks out of everybody else,” Cicerone said.

The Mustangs — who led by six after one quarter, and 18 points at the half — had eight players score in Wednesday’s game, and half of those in double figures, led by Kaschalk’s 15. Moore had 12, while Isabel Hayes and Hannah Redoute had 10 each.

“They all just came together tonight. Lucky for us, we just had a good night,” Cicerone said.

Kristin Cleary lead Gabriel Richard with 12 points.
