WHITE LAKE - Five goals in the second period, including two goals in the first 49 seconds of that period powered Troy United past Lakeland 7-4 at Lakeland Ice Arena.

It took eight minutes into the contest before Lakeland’s Tyler Martin avoided a Troy defender and slid the puck past the netminder to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead with 7:09 left in the first period. Neither team would mount a serious threat through the remainder of the period leaving the score at 1-0 Lakeland headed into the second.

The fireworks started in the second period as Cameron Mercer of Troy scored an unassisted goal just eighteen seconds into the period tying things up at 1-1. Lightning would strike again for Troy a mere twenty-three seconds later as Merick Witkowski would find the back of the net assisted by Mitch Cochran and Mercer.

“We were looking to start bringing the pressure to them in the second period,” stated Troy coach John Hunter in the postgame. “In the first, they were bringing the pressure to us, they are a good hockey team, they were dumping the puck in, forechecking us and putting us on our heels, we wanted to counter attack that pressure in the second and ended up doing that.”

Troy United enjoyed a 2-1 advantage until 10:57 left in the second period when Lakeland’s Mack Hastings would score an unassisted power play goal knotting the score at 2-2.

Minutes later, both teams would trade goals putting the score at 3-3 before United scored the next four goals making it a 7-3 game with less than thirteen minutes left in the game.

“We played a solid first period, the second period they scored two quick goals and it got away from us,” was Lakeland head coach Tim Ronayne’s reaction after the game. “They scored the five goals in the second. When a team scores five goals it is hard to come back from. They are a good team and they got the bounces today and we didn’t. It just avalanched on us and sometimes that happens in hockey.”

A late Eagle goal by Spencer Sienkiewicz would make it 7-4 in favor of Troy United but Lakeland wasn’t able to make it any closer.

Talking about his defense Troy’s Hunter had this to say, “We like to protect our net, our war zone, we had guys taking sticks and helping out our goalie on the second chance and our guys would clear out the house.”

Witkowski lead the Troy United effort on the night with three goals while Mercer tallied two goals and two assists. Christopher Kondoleon and Cochran rounded out the Troy scoring.

For the Eagles, Martin netted two of the Lakeland goals while Hastings and Sienkiewicz added a goal apiece.
