BIRMINGHAM – Though it’s not in first place, the Birmingham Groves boys basketball team is still very much a contender in the OAA Blue.

The Falcons made their annual road trip to face their biggest rival, Birmingham Seaholm, Tuesday night and Groves was all business on its way to a 55-44 win.

“This keeps us a game out of first place and that is the important aspect of this win,” Groves coach Marc West said. “We talked about trying to keep the emotion of playing at Seaholm out of it and just focus on playing basketball. I think we did a good job of that (Tuesday) and now we stay right in the hunt in the OAA Blue.”

The Falcons are now 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the OAA Blue. Their two losses came against Oxford (4-2 OAA Blue) and Stoney Creek (5-1) by a combined seven points. Groves will get a chance to see them again in the final week of the regular season.

“This is that stretch run and I think we are close to where we want to be, but we aren’t there yet,” West said. “I don’t think we are a team that can make a real run yet. We have stretches where we do, but we aren’t doing it consistently enough. I think we know what it takes, but we just have to do it over multiple games.”

On Tuesday, the Falcons used their speed and athleticism to run past the Maples (7-8, 2-4) in the opening half. Transition points piled up early as Groves took a 31-18 lead into halftime thanks in part to four 3-pointers.

“(Groves) is more athletic than we are. We had trouble even getting down the floor with them at times,” Seaholm coach Mike DeGeeter said. “They beautifully ran their break and had some great passes to get some open looks on the arc.”

In the second half, Seaholm couldn’t quite get back into the game. The Maples would manage to cut the Groves lead down to eight on multiple occasions, but couldn’t get any closer.

“It was a workman-like second half. We just kept grinding away and we knew (Seaholm) wasn’t going to stop playing hard,” West said. “We had chances to maybe extend our lead at times and didn’t quite do it, but I was still happy with how we kept grinding and maintained in the second half.”

Julian Bell led Groves with 18 points while Marcus Pittman added 10 and Drew Sheckell had nine.

Seaholm was led by Liam Neel, who had 11 points while Max Clark and Graham Girdler each had eight.
