The Black Hawks prevailed 52-51 in a battle between two of Oakland County's best teams.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Missed foul shots at each end and some tentative officiating shaped the final minute of play Tuesday in an otherwise playoff-caliber game between two of Oakland County’s finest teams, Bloomfield Hills and Clarkston.

Trailing by one point with 50 seconds remaining, Clarkston was in an unusual predicament with five fouls still to give to be able to send Bloomfield Hills to the free-throw line.

With eight seconds left, a miss by the Black Hawks on the front end of a one-and-one free throw allowed Clarkston to race down the floor and fire up a wild shot, drawing a foul. The Wolves missed both attempts, however, leaving the Black Hawks in front for a one-point, 52-51 win.

What began as a neck-and-neck contest where neither team took a lead of more than three points until late in the first half, Clarkston quickly built a seven-point advantage going into halftime. Bloomfield Hills responded immediately out of the break, posting a 10-2 scoring run to retake the lead.

“For us, we got ourselves in a little hole in the second quarter, but were able to come out in the third and get out of it,” Black Hawks coach Jeff Rubin said. “We took a five point lead, which was a good cushion because we got a little bit flat there in the fourth. But we hung on.”

Bloomfield Hills broke a 47-47 tie with 2:29 to play when senior center Amanda Sape knocked down a surprise 3-pointer at the top of the arc. One possession later, sophomore Maryam Hashim swiftly drove to the basket and converted a key layup to give the Black Hawks a three-point edge with 90 seconds left.

“The defense was sagging and she recognized the hole and got to the basket,” Rubin said of his young point guard, Hashim.

The basket marked the final points for Bloomfield Hills, but Clarkston was unable to get the points it needed to extend the game.

“We came out to play tonight,” Wolves coach Christine Rogers said. “Kayla Luchenbach had the best game she’s had in a while and Molly Nicholson did too,” Rogers said. “We had Ali Buscher coming off the bench and playing some very tough defense on Amanda Sape.”

The formidable battle between the Wolves’ three-player front-court and Sape was fought all night. Luchebach posted a team-high 16 points for the Wolves, while Sape recorded a game-high 24 points — including three 3-pointers — to go with 19 rebounds and four blocks.

“It was her threes, I think, that were the difference in the game,” Rogers said of Sape. “When you face a player that can play like that under the hoop and drop threes, it’s tough to beat a team with a player like that.”

Rubin said it was the first time all season Sape had converted multiple 3-pointers.

“She recognizes that at this point of her career, we’re trying to help her get ready for college,” he said. “Teams expect her to run deep and post up, but if their players are going to sag off an expect her to meet them, we’re going to have her trail the play and shoot.”

Victorie Franklin and Becca Hancock added 10 and nine points, respectively, for Bloomfield Hills (16-1).

The Black Hawks’ win extended their win streak to 15 games. Having already clinched a share of the OAA White Division title last week, Bloomfield Hills will play for the outright title on Thursday against Farmington Hills Harrison.

“For these girls, it’s been a long time coming. They’ve worked really hard,” Rubin said of the division title.

For Clarkston (14-4, 5-2 OAA Red), junior Maddie Beck scored 15 points and Nicholson added 11, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the line in the final three minutes.

The Wolves will face North Farmington on Thursday.
