PONTIAC - It came down to the last match in Orchard Lake St. Mary’s team district final Wednesday against Avondale at Pontiac High. And when the Yellow Jackets couldn’t offer a 103-pounder for the final match, it was all over as the Eaglets advanced with a 40-39 triumph over Avondale.

St. Mary’s coach Neil Fenzel wasn’t complaining, although he accepted the victory. “We’re a much better tournament team,” he volunteered, “(and) we’re banged up. But everybody’s beat up.”

Indeed, Caleb Edmond, one of the team’s top wrestlers is out for the season with an injury, and many teams are scrapping to fill-in for sickness and injuries all over.

But the Eaglets were the fortunate ones in a Division 2 district which included Pontiac and Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.

The Irish tied Avondale 36-36 in the district semifinal, but lost on criteria when the Yellow Jackets tallied seven victories to the Irish’s six.

“This is my first year as head coach,” said Irish coach Tyler Yanik. “We’ve always had good kids and they’ve wrestled well. Our 112-pounder got in an accident a week or so ago and we didn’t have the wrestlers or the numbers. We voided three weight classes (and) that makes a difference. (But) we wrestled well.”

Pontiac lost a 48-33 decision to St. Mary’s in the other semifinal and voided six of 14 weight classes, using eight wrestlers to score 33 points. “We’ve improved from the beginning of the season until now,” said Polk, who had several wrestlers transfer to other schools in the middle of the season. Only eight remained. “About 30 days ago, that’s when we came together as a team. It showed today what we can do with the little we have.”
