With its strong history in cross country, which has netted a pair of state titles, several league crowns as well as regional and Oakland County meet titles in the past 20 seasons, Novi High School takes its distance running seriously.

The Wildcats are also serious in the classroom, where for the third consecutive year, the boys’ squad has been crowned Academic State Champions. With their cumulative grade point average of 4.0, the Wildcats defeated all the other teams who competed last fall at the state cross country championships at Michigan International Speedway.

Scott MacPherson, Aric Landy, Chris Silva, Gabe Mudel, John Landy, Nate Wood and Trey Mullins comprised the Novi varsity squad which competed at the state finals as well as maintained high GPAs.

“The fastest runners on our team each carry a perfect GPA,” said Novi coach Robert Smith.

“We take as much pride in winning the academic state championship as we do with our athletic achievements. It is a huge point of pride for our program.”

Novi, who won the Oakland County meet title, placed fourth at the Division 1 state meet this past season. Only about 20 percent of all cross country teams even qualify for the state finals.

“To place in the Top 10 at the state meet is quite an achievement” Smith said. “I am extremely proud of this team; both on the cross country course and in the classroom”.

Novi, who has produced some of the area’s best distance runners, has placed in the top 10 in the state meet 13 times, including two state championships (1998-99) and two runner-up finishes (2000 and 2006). Novi has also has won four academic state championships.
