ROCHESTER HILLS >> The Farmington Hills Mercy faithful were cheering their hearts out, hoping to will the Marlins in the meet-deciding final event, the 400 freestyle relay, Saturday at the Division 1 state swimming and diving championships.

But the Marlins’ fourth-place finish (3:28.81) wasn’t good enough to catch Rockford, who finished second (3:26.55) in the event to sew up the state title before a raucous gathering at Oakland University’s Natatorium.

Rockford finished with 249 points, Farmington Hills Mercy followed with 239 while Lake Orion finished eighth (111), Rochester Adams ninth (91) and Lakeland 10th (76), two places ahead of South Lyon (67).

Only eight points separated four teams two-thirds of the way through the meet, and the Marlins, who finished third at last year’s state championships, were in the mix with defending state champ Ann Arbor Skyline and Saline until the end.

“You want to be in the thick of things at the end and the girls put us in that position,” said first-year Mercy coach Mike Venos. “It was darn exciting. As a coach, you can’t ask much more than that.”

Indeed, the Marlins, somber after their effort in the final event, had made their presence known throughout the meet. Katie Minnich, who set a D1 state-meet record in the 100 backstroke in Friday’s preliminaries (53.99), won the final in 54.41 with teammate Alaina Skellett finishing second (54.95). The pair also swam on the third-place 200 medley relay (1:45.08) joining teammates Allie Lobbia and Annette Dombkowski, and Skellett placed third in the 100 butterfly.

Kendall Goit was fourth in the 200 freestyle and Kylie Goit was seventh in the 200 freestyle, and Minnich was also sixth in the 200 individual medley as the Marlins continued gathering points. The trio joined Skellett on the 400 freestyle relay.

But after the points were tabulated, it was Rockford’s Rams who took a playful victory plunge into the pool.

The Marlins would have liked to have taken the same plunge, even with their eye-catching maroon and gold hockey-style warmups, if it meant a title. But so close to a championship trophy was heartbreaking for the Marlins.

“We needed to beat them (Rockford) by a few places to even tie,” Venos said, “but we left everything in the pool. To finish second as a team, I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. It’s tough trusting a new coach and a new system, but the future looks bright for these young ladies.”

Lake Orion finished eighth, continuing strong efforts in state competition. Claire Abbasse finished third in the 100 freestyle (50.29), breaking the school record of Annie Jongekrijg, who attended the meet, and Sarah Hennings (seventh in the 100 backstroke) placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (56.15). Both joined Eliana Ritt and Zoe Quinn on the seventh-place 400 relay team (3:30.70). Lake Orion was also seventh in the 200 medley relay.

“The last five years we’ve been in the top nine,” said Lake Orion coach Darrin Abbasse. “All of the kids did a great job, a good day for Lake Orion.”

Lakeland’s Kate Doyle placed fifth in the 500 freestyle, Emma Hazel was fourth in the 100 backstroke and Courtney Connolly finished seventh in the 200 individual medley for the Eagles, who were nudged out of a finals spot in the 200 medley relay during a swim-off Friday.

Among other performances, Nicole Pape of Rochester Adams was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:04.29) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke, Lakeland’s Courtney Connolly was eighth (2:08.58), Harrison Farmington’s Ashley Turak was second in the 50 freestyle (23.08) and fourth in the 100 freestyle, Abbasse was fourth in the 50 freestyle, Walled Lake Central’s Amanda Ling was third in diving (458.00), Lakeland’s Emma Hazel was sixth in the 100 butterfly (56.42) and sixth in the 100 backstroke, and teammate Kate Doyle was fifth in the 500 freestyle. South Lyon’s quartet of Carolyn Bischoff, Lindsay Boals, Emily Kurt and Melanie Dunnuck finished eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.
